Here’s a question: which player has scored the most Welsh Cup goals in a single season?

With Trearddur Bay’s Tom Hilditch going great guns in this season’s Welsh Cup, scoring 10 goals in five ties so far, this question is getting asked quite often…..

Which footballer has scored the most Welsh Cup goals in a single season?

It’s an interesting poser and one we’ll probably never know the answer to.

But we can give it a go……

One would expect the all-time top marksman will have played in an era where there were several rounds of the nation’s premier knockout.

The Welsh Cup was first competed for in 1877-78. Wrexham were the winners, beating Druids FC Ruabon 1-0 in the final.

Just 19 clubs entered, not all actually fulfilled a fixture and there were a mere five rounds in total.

Through the years, the competition grew in size with more clubs competing leading to added rounds.

However, while the vast majority of match scores are logged on the Welsh Football Data Archive, goalscorers’ names are not. Unearthing such data appears to be very difficult.

When it comes to the more modern-era. information becomes a little easier to find, but overall is still scarce.

The highest number of individual Welsh Cup goals in a season would probably not be as many as one would think.

Even in the seasons of larger entry numbers and more rounds, the bigger clubs have not joined in until the later stages, thus often restricting the chance of players filling their boots against lower-ranked teams, many of whom would have been eliminated earlier on.

Here’s a few of our observations….

2001-02: Marc Lloyd Williams (Bangor City) 13 goals

This achievement could be somewhere near the record.
My own research has been unable to find anyone who has scored more than 13 in a Welsh Cup season., but there’s a lot of data I have no access to.
In 2001-02, Bangor City’s Marc Lloyd Williams scored: 3 v Porthmadog, 6 v Cardiff Civil Service, 3 v Cefn Druids and 1 v Carmarthen Town. City made the final, but lost to Barry Town.
This was the campaign where Lloyd Williams netted a record 47 Welsh Premier goals in a season and bagged 66 in all competitions.

2017-18: Mark Roberts (Llandyrnog United) 8 goals in a single tie

Mark Roberts (right) receives his player of the round award after scoring eight goals in a Welsh Cup tie for Llandyrnog United in 2017/18

In 2017-18, legendary Vale of Clwyd striker Mark Roberts netted EIGHT times for Llandyrnog in a 12-3 victory at Blaenau Amateurs in the first qualifying round. An all-time record in a single tie?
Roberts was well set for a huge total in the competition, but Dyrny lost 5-1 at Llanrug United in the next round. And Mark did not score the visitors’ goal.

2024-25: The New Saints scored 35 goals in six ties

Last season, TNS amassed 35 goals in six ties in winning the Welsh Cup, including an early round 16-0 demolition of Llangollen Town.
Surely one of their players bagged a bundle in the competition?
Surprisingly, their top-scorer was Adam Wilson with just four goals – all netted in the same match. With a talented all-round team like TNS, guess goals can come from anywhere.
Welsh Cup results 2024-25
R2: Llangollen Town 16-0 (Adam Wilson 4, Declan McManus 2, Danny Redmond 2, Ash Baker 2, Ryan Brobbel 2, Blaine Hudson, Josh Pask, Tom Jones, Sion Bradley)
R3: Cardiff Met 3-1 (Brobbel, Jordan Williams 2)
R4: Colwyn Bay 4-1 (McManus, Aramide Oteh 2, Adrian Cieslewicz)
QF: Airbus UK Broughton 5-0 (Ben Clark, Leo Smith, Bradley, Zack Clarke, Kieran Evans OG)
SF: Cambrian United 5-0 (Redmond, Cieslewicz, Clarke 2, Rory Holden)
F: Connah’s Quay Nomads 2-1 (Holden, J Williams)

Shrewsbury Town?

Back in 1894-95, Shrewsbury Town handed Mold Alyn Stars an all-time Welsh Cup record 21-0 defeat in a first round tie.
No record of the scorers that day, unfortunately. However, there’s a good chance our all-time highest hitman was not involved that season as the Shrews lost 4-0 at Druids in the very next round.

2025-26: Tom Hilditch – 10 goals (and counting?)

Had Trearddur Bay’s qualifying round one tie versus Caergybi been played (opponents withdrew), striker Hilditch could have knocked in even more than 10 in this season’s competition.
The Anglesey side from the Tier 3 Ardal North West League will be seeking a giant-killing at Cymru Premier Flint Town United in the quarter-finals early next year.
Hilditch will no doubt be out to add more Welsh Cup goals to the bank against one of his former clubs.

Tom Hilditch’s 2025-26 Welsh Cup goals

CONCLUSION

This article is really just a testing ground.

Does anyone know of a player who has netted more than 13 Welsh Cup goals in a single season?

Perhaps there is a Mid or South Wales reader out there with a gem up their sleeve?

Who is our Just Fontaine or Ted McDougall?
