MATCH OF THE NIGHT: Tigers miss chance to go top after Llanberis grab a draw

Menai Bridge Tigers 1 (Hogan 74)

REPORT: SHAUN BEST

Menai Bridge Tigers’ promotion push suffered a blow after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Llanberis on Friday evening.

The result means early pace-setters the Tigers have now drawn three out of their last four games.

Ahead of this fixture, Bridge had only lost one league match all season, while in comparison, the visitors had just a single league victory to their name and were looking over their shoulders in 12th place.

However, Llanberis quickly reminded everyone that matches aren’t won on paper. The game was barely a minute old when Guto Jones ghosted through a static home defence and angled his shot wide.

Soon after, the Darans turned the form book upside down and hit the front after Dion Owen’s close range effort found the net.

It could have been two when Thomas Collins beat Tigers goalkeeper Leo Owen to the ball, but his pull back from the byline was blazed over into the car park by Huw Owen.

Midway through the first half, the Tigers finally stirred and showed some bite. James McMinimee tested Dylan Roberts from distance, forcing the shot stopper to turn his effort round the post. Roberts then remained alert to snuff out several balls into the box.

Right before half time, Joni Sadler’s pinpoint cross found the head of John Littlemore, but the Tigers man somehow spurned a golden chance to equalise just yards from goal.

Llanberis struck the crossbar directly from a corner, but spent much of the second period in their own half. Their backline formed a well-timed shield to clear one effort off the line, before the hosts finally found a way through to equalise in the 74th minute.

A loose ball came out to Sion Hogan and the Menai captain picked his spot to lash beyond Roberts.

The Tigers committed everyone forward, but couldn’t quite execute the final ball consistently.

Collins threw himself into harm’s way and took the full impact of the ball to keep Jamie McDaid from putting the hosts ahead.

Top-scorer McDaid continued to be thwarted when his free kick was deflected inches wide of the post before Roberts palmed one final effort over the bar to safety.
