MATCH OF THE DAY 1: Penmaenmawr Phoenix win Trophy derby at Y Morfa

DRAGON SIGNS AMATEUR TROPHY ROUND THREE – NOVEMBER 1, 2025

Conwy Borough 0
Penmaenmawr Phoenix 3 (Jay Sutton 8 & 63, Dan Evans 28)

Tier 4 hosted Tier 3 in a Trophy coastline railway derby at Y Morfa – and it was the visiting side’s Jay Sutton who made a key difference with his first goals for the club since signing in September.

A fast start from the away team saw them dominate possession and it took 8 minutes for the Phoenix to get their reward.

A great pass from James Hobson was met at the back post by Harley Farr, who headed across the 6 yard box for Sutton, who smashed home the opener.

That goal gave the home side the wake up call they needed, however the Phoenix defence stood strong to quash any attempted attacks.

Dan Evans doubled the Pen advantage in the 28th minute. Midfielder Leigh Craven delivered a ball into the box and Evans’ clever movement saw him unmarked at the back stick to head home.

A couple of minutes later Evans was unlucky not to double his tally for the afternoon when he forced home keeper Felix Domagala into a fantastic save to keep his team in the tie.

The score remained 2-0 to the visitors at half time.

The second half started with Conwy on the front foot. With nothing to lose they threw the kitchen sink at Phoenix. Jacob Guy went close, clipping the top of the bar with an effort and a great save from Cameron Darling kept his clean sheet intact.

MOTM Sutton rounded off the goals in the 63rd minute. A through ball from craven saw Sutton beat the offside trap and slot into the net past the onrushing Domagala. The Phoenix were unlucky not to extend their lead with Leon Atkins, Daniel McIlvogue and Sutton all going close with attempts.

The game ended on a sour note when a nasty injury occurred to young Conwy player Alex McGoona.

With one minute left on the clock an awkward landing signalled the end of the game as the player was stretchered off by both teams. Everyone at the Phoenix sends best wishes and a speedy recovery.
