Llangefni Town Ladies’ first-ever competitive game and their latest….identical scorelines, but an awful lot has happened in the four-and-a-half years between the two matches.
One Cefni constant has been manager Dan Gregg. In what has been a roller-coaster ride at times, the Holyhead-based boss has never stopped believing that this team could go places.
There were a few knocks along the way. narrowly missing out on league titles, loss of key players through injury and departures, and not always the best deal from football authorities.
Last season, Cefni were denied the chance they had earned to participate in a Tier 2 promotion play-off because Berriew were awarded instant elevation to Adran North by an FAW ruling.
But however difficult the struggles have been, the day Llangefni lifted the North Wales Coast League title made it all worthwhile.
Every season since they formed has seen Llangefni progress, the Betty Pickering Cup success of 2023-24, giant-killings of Tier 2 Flint and Llanfair United, back-to-back Tier 3 runners-up, but being crowned champions on Sunday was the pinnacle.
For much of his tenure, Gregg has had Liam Ewing on board as his able assistant, and the manager was keen to acknowledge his input.
“I couldn’t have done this without Liam Ewing,” he said. “The guy is the ying to my yang, he deserves as much if not more praise than me.”
As well as leading Llangefni Town, Gregg has also been manager of the Ynys Môn Island Games women’s squad for the past two tournaments, achieving some great results.
Assessing what has just been achieved at Llangefni, he added: “This is all down to the hard work, belief and mentality to be able to bounce back from heartbreak last season from every single player.
“And the new signings have injected a new energy into our side. As for the players, I just try my best to just keep them happy and confident, that’s literally all i do. Everything we’ve done this season is from the players.”
