North Wales Police have made an arrest following an alleged racism incident at a football match on Anglesey.
On Friday night, it is believed a racist comment was directed at a footballer by a spectator during the Ardal North West match between Llangefni Town and Trearddur Bay.
A youth was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident and has since been bailed with conditions while police continue their investigation.
District Inspector Wayne Francis said: “We will not tolerate racism in any form anywhere in our communities- in or out of sport.
“Officers took swift action following the report of the incident to identify those involved.
“I would thank both football clubs for their ongoing assistance.
“We are supportive of initiatives such as the Welsh Football Association’s ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ scheme and will continue to work closely with partners and community members to ensure incidents of this nature are taken seriously and dealt with robustly.”
Llangefni Town published an immediate response to the incident on social media following Friday’s game.
“Llangefni Town Football Club is deeply saddened and appalled by the racial incident that occurred during tonight’s match against Trearddur Bay.
“Racism and discrimination of any kind have absolutely no place in our club, football, or in our community. We offer our sincere apologies to the player affected and to Trearddur Bay Football Club for this unacceptable behaviour.
“Llangefni Town FC does not tolerate racism in any form.
“Llangefni Town FC stands firmly for respect, equality, and inclusion—both on and off the pitch.”
