Kinmel Bay prepare for biggest game in their history after progressing in Cookson Cup

Kinmel Bay are getting used to playing big games, but this weekend the Tier 4 club faces the biggest match in their history.

The North Wales Coast East Premier Division side take on Cymru Premier outfit Colwyn Bay at the Blue Turtle Arena on Friday night in the Welsh Cup.

Kinmel Bay were originally drawn at home for the round two/last 64 tie, but accepted Colwyn Bay’s offer to switch the venue to the Seagulls’ home ground. In a gesture of great generosity, Colwyn Bay have said their visitors can have all the gate receipts.

With Colwyn Bay being the best supported club in North Wales after Wrexham, not to mention Kinmel’s own fervant following, that should ensure a large crowd gathers at Llanelian Road for Friday’s tie, which kicks off at 7.30 pm.

This will be the first time Kinmel Bay have played Tier 1 opposition.

To reach the second round, Andy Thomas, Leon Field and Alex Craig’s side knocked out Chirk AAA on penalties, followed by Tier 3 teams Llangollen Town and Llanfair United.

Kinmel Bay have won nine out of 10 matches so far in 2025-26. Colwyn Bay are fifth in the Cymru Premier in their first season back in top flight following a one-campaign stay in 2023-24.

One of Kinmel’s management team, Leon Field, is a former Colwyn Bay player.

Meanwhile, the Morfa club tuned up for their big date with a hard-earned 2-1 victory at CPD Llansannan in the Cookson Cup last weekend.

All the goals came in the first half at the village ground.

Jared Hughes opened the scoring after just five minutes, benefiting from a Josh Williams assist.

Matthew Rees doubled the away advantage on 40 minutes, Josh Parry this time the chance supplier.

Tom Seddon pulled one back for Llansannan just before the break to set up a fascinating second period.

With man of the match Liam Jones a rock at the back, Kinmel Bay stayed strong defensively in the second half and ran out narrow winners.
