On this weekend 15 years ago Holyhead Hotspur thrashed then Welsh Alliance League leaders Denbigh Town 4-0 at the New Stadium.
A stiff wind made it difficult for the visitors, but the Harbourmen weren’t complaining, playing the conditions well and thoroughly deserving of the score line.
It was Denbigh who began the brightest, with Ian Evans almost opening the scoring on 4 minutes. His close ranger at the far post was tipped behind and from the corner Craig Wilkinson curled one just wide.
But from the goal kick the hosts took the lead in bizarre circumstances. A long ball from Kenleigh Owen was caught in the wind and sailed over keeper Ash Crosthwaite who was left cursing his luck as the ball found the net.
It was now all Hotspur and they grabbed another on 24 minutes. Mel McGinness got his head on a cross to the near post and the Islanders were now rampant.
The second stanza saw the Vale of Clwyd side playing with the wind but this had little effect as the hosts continued to carry the game to their visitors.
It was 3-0 on 56 minutes, Owen spanking his second goal through a wall which parted like the Red Sea.
On 66 minutes Holyhead added another. Barry Haigh, who had tormented the Town for much of the game, grabbed a deserved strike from 12 yards.
For Denbigh, Liam Jones struck the upright via a drive from 20 yards and Jonny Slater saw a goal bound header tipped round the post.
