Llangefni Town’s opponents in the NWCFA Challenge Cup last weekend gave them good practice for some of the what would have been unexpected tough challenges ahead this season.
After CPD Y Rhyl 1879’s withdrawal from the Tier 2 Adran North, Cefni turned down an offer of promotion in their place, but did accept an invitation to compete in the Genero Ardan Trophy competition for T 1 and 2 clubs.
Llangefni join a group also including CPDM Bangor, Flint Town United and Llanfair United. The Ynys Môn side kick off this Sunday with a trip to Bangor.
So for Dan Gregg’s Tier 3 islanders, last Sunday’s cup meeting with T2 Y Felinheli was ideal preparation for the Trophy hurdles to come.
And Town put up a good show, taking the lead against Felin before eventually going down 3-1 at Cae Bob Parry.
With several new faces in the squad, Cefni were ready for the test of a higher-ranked opponent.
The home side began the game strongly, with their efforts quickly paying off. Just a few minutes into the match, a corner from Marissa George found Llinos Hughes’s head in the box. The ball ricocheted to the feet of captain Catrin Roberts, who slotted it into the back of the net to score the team’s first goal of the season.
Llangefni continued to press, creating several opportunities, but the score remained 1-0 as both teams battled until the half time whistle.
In the second half, Llangefni’s defence held strong, successfully fending off Felinheli’s attacks for a good spell. However, the visitors eventually found their rhythm, equalising through Llywela Edwards and then scoring a second goal in quick succession through new signing Anna Jones.
By the 70th minute, they had extended their lead to 3-1, Rubie Davies on target.
Despite the deficit, Llangefni refused to give up, with the team creating several more chances in an attempt to claw back the scoreline.
The game concluded with a final score of 3-1 to Felinheli, who will now progress to the semi-finals.
Everyone at Llangefni Town Ladies FC would like to wish Felinheli midfielder Jody Cain a speedy recovery and quick return to the field following an injury sustained during the match.
Llangefni’s next fixture is on Sunday, 7th of September, as they take on CPDM Bangor at Bangor City Stadium in the Adran Trophy.
