Six major ties to watch out for in the Welsh Cup second qualifying round northern this weekend……..
CPD Sychdyn United v Lex XI (Friday – 6.45 pm)
This could be a really interesting one as Tier 5 pace-setters Sychdyn United host illustrious Lex, promoted to Tier 3 this season but struggling.
Sychdyn are top of North East Wales League Division 2 after wins over Yr Wyddgrug and Cefn Druids, while the Lawmen, who have lost numerous key players over the summer, are one off the bottom of Ardal North East with a draw and four defeats from their five matches.
If Seb Kidd stays on form in front of goal for the Wrexham visitors he could be a vital figure, but watch out for Sychdyn’s early sharp-shooters Adam Woosey and Ewan Whitley.
Bethesda Athletic v NFA (Saturday – 2 pm)
An all-tier 3 battle at Parc Meurig could end up a cracker.
NFA have kicked off their second season in Ardal North West really well – unbeaten in five with two wins and three draws, while Pesda have taken just three points from their first four outings.
Conwy Borough Swifts v CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876 (Saturday – 2 pm)
Two newly-named clubs from places steeped in impressive football history meet in the nation’s premier club knockout competition.
Bangor are top of Tier 3 Ardal North West, while Conwy lie fourth in the Tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier.
Can 1876 top-scorer Corrig McGonigle wreck his former club’s dreams of a giant-killing?
Llandudno Amateurs v Porthmadog (Saturday – 2 pm)
With Porthmadog third in Ardal North West after four straight wins and probably the most famous club involved in this stage of the competition, this has to be classed as a glamour tie for Tier 4 hopefuls Amateurs.
Llandudno have banged in 20 goals in their first four games, with the likes of attackers Jay Sutton and Morgan Thomas capable of making life difficult for Port.
However, the Llŷn Peninsula visitors possess so many goal threats themselves. With strikers such as Jonny Bravo and Rhys Alun on call, they must be classed as favourites.
Nonetheless, Port have already been victims of one upset this season when Tier 4 Nefyn United knocked them ouf ot the FAW Amateur Trophy on penalties.
Llangefni Town v Trearddur Bay (Saturday – 2 pm)
Two of Anglesey’s top clubs clash at Cae Bob Parry in an all-Tier 3 Ardal North West tussle.
Cefni are unbeaten to date, while Bay lie mid-table.
When these two met last season, Trearddur won 2-1 at Town, but Llangefni gained revenge by beating their opponents away by the same score.
After scoring five at home in an 8-0 demolition of Penmaenmawr recently, Osian Jones could be a real danger for Cefni, while Trearddur front man Josh Stanley will be out to punish his former club.
Llay Welfare v Cefn Albion (Saturday – 2 pm)
One of the ties of the round is on the cards at The Ring when Ardal North West Llay host Cefn Albion, currently second in Ardal North East.
This Wrexham-area derby has the makings of a classic.
Cavan Daley has been electric so far for the Welly this season up front, while Alex Williams is in magical form for the Cefners with seven goals in four matches to date.
