Ynys Môn women will play-off for fifth place on Thursday

Ynys Môn women will meet Jersey in a fifth-sixth place play-off at the Orkney Island Games on Thursday.
This will be a repeat of the same fixture at the 2023 Games in Guernsey, which Môn won 3-2 to clinch fifth spot.
Tuesday saw Dan Gregg’s side produce a magnificent performance to hammer Hitra 6-1, goals coming from Menna Evans (2), Hannah Owen, Casi Evans (pen), Ceri Slaney and Ellie Jones.
Unfortunately, Môn had lost 4-2 to Western Isles the previous day so finished second in Group C, which was not enough to reach the semis.
WI advanced as group winners having defeated Hitra 3-0 in their opening match.
Regardless of where they finish, Ynys Môn can take immense pride from their efforts in Orkney, with Tuesday’s 6-1 result the team’s biggest-ever victory.
Against Western Isles, they were not beaten so much by the opposition but more the strong swirling winds.
Most of the WI goals were gust-assisted, one of them flying in direct from a corner. No doubt the conditions suited the Scots more.
Ynys Môn women were also featured on ITV News this week, where footage from the Western Isles match was shown and players, management and parents were interviewed.
It was pointed out that while the Cymru women’s national team were out of Euro 2025, where they failed to win a game, Wales was still being represented in an international tournament by Ynys Môn.
The Anglesey ladies have come on in leaps and bounds at the last two Island Games, which followed the one-off 2019 Inter-Games on Ynys Môn, where the host women won a silver medal.
Ynys Môn v Jersey will play off for fifth spot on Thursday, July 17 – kick-off 3.30 pm at Stromness Academy.
