FOOTBALL – JULY 14
Men’s Group C
Ynys Môn 1 Western Isles 0
A 90th minute 20-yard strike from Llangefni Town’s Jack Smith secured a dramatic and deserved opening group game victory for Ynys Môn men at Rendall.
Having seen Western Isles lose 2-0 to Bermuda the previous day in Group C, Môn knew they were in for a tough test against a well organised, physical team.
After taking a while to settle, Môn began to get into their strikde. Liam Morris started getting on the ball and created a great chance for Osian Jones, who was denied by a great save from Jack Maclennan.
Sam Jones also narrowly missed with an effort towards the top corner.
Môn played with the wind in the second half and the introduction of Josh Stanley and Alex Boss gave them fresh options, which resulted in WI left back Harry Bray receiving a second yellow.
Morris was soon inches away from connecting with a cross via Sam Jones as Môn chased the opening goal.
The Welsh side kept going till the end and Smith, who had an outstanding game, settled it when the ball dropped to him 20 yards put and his dipping volley went in off the bar.
Delighted Môn head coach Martin Jones said: “We knew it was going to be tough but we have a great team spirit that will see us go until the very end.
“Jack Smith was the outstanding player on the pitch and deserved to score the winner. We’re so lucky to have plenty of match winners in our squad. We are now looking forward to facing Bermuda.”
That game versus Bermuda at Stromness Academy on Tuesday evening will decide who wins the group.
