Bangor City Stadium chosen as site for UK’s first full-size 4G pitch

Work will soon commence on the UK’s first 4G playing surface – based at Bangor City Stadium!

The pioneering project will be funded through the Cymru Football Foundation’s Fit-For-Future Facilities Programme and in collaboration with CPD Dinas Bangor 1876 and Nantporth C.I.C.

The CFF – supported by the UK Government’s Grassroots Facility Programme and the Premier League – will pilot the surface in a first of its kind through a £350k investment to install the new pitch at Bangor City Stadium.

The development will be an upgrade of the current 3G pitch at the stadium with state-of-the-art facilities built alongside.

The main grass pitch where CPD Dinas Bangor 1876 play their matches will remain the same.

Already being utilised across Europe by the likes of PSV Eindhoven, this innovative approach provides an alternative to the current 3G surface which includes rubber-crumb infill seen widely across artificial pitches across the U.K.

The non-infill design of a 4G surface provides a higher level of environmental sustainability, is cost-effective in removing infill and reduces maintenance requirements whilst continuing to provide a high-quality playing experience for users.

Stadium director Lee Dixon said: “We absolutely delighted to have received the CFF funding approval and we thank them for this substantial investment . A combined total project investment of nearly £520,000 will be invested into the current 4G facilities where we will also provide new state of the art dressing rooms, toilets and catering facilities.

“The state of the art 4G surface will put the City on the map to show clubs around the UK that we are a leader in providing “best in class” sporting facilities.”

At the Cymru Football Foundation we are passionate about testing and trialling innovative approaches and embracing new technology to deliver the best facilities for our communities and this project represents a significant milestone in the development of artificial pitch technology. The CFF supports the development of football facilities through investment and guidance as it delivers the Football Association of Wales’ commitment to develop inspirational fit-for-future football facilities that will improve and grow Welsh football both on and off the pitch.

Since 2022, the CFF has invested over £18 million into supporting fit-for-future facilities across the country.
