CPD Pwllheli are champions for a second season in a row

Pwllheli are North East Wales Women’s League West Division champions for 2024-25

Llongyfarchiadau CPD Pwllheli – Pencampwyr unwaith eto!

CPD Pwllheli were crowned North East Wales Women’s League West Division champions for a second successive season after getting the point they needed to seal the title with a 2-2 draw at Trearddur Bay today.

It was far from an easy ride, though, with the Anglesey hosts pushing the undefeated Llŷn Peninsula outfit all the way.

Thursday’s 1-0 win at Llangefni Town had put Pwll level on points with the Ynys Môn side but behind on goal difference. So they still needed a point from their last game at Trearddur to finish champions.

Anyone who may have expected a comfortable win for Erica Jones’ team today would have been surprised as Bay refused to lie down.

The islanders were 2-1 up at one stage and it needed a Jini Owen Hughes equaliser to clinch the draw.

Right up until the final whistle, the outcome was in doubt. A winner for Trearddur and Llangefni would have taken the title on goal difference.

However, Pwllheli ended up in top spot again and now face Berriew in a play-off to be crowned overall North East Wales League champions. Pwll won title last season.

The reigning champions took a 14th minute lead at Lon Isallt when Charley Davies made it 11 goals in her last eight games, heading a beautfully flighted Magi Hughes flag-kick into the bottom corner.

However, by the midway stage of the first half, a Jess Woods double had put Bay 2-1 in front.

Pwllheli levelled on 36 minutes when Jini Owen Hughes notched her 20th goal of the season. Stacey Sansome fed Sian Moore, whose precision pass found Hughes, who drilled in from the penalty spot.

Both sides put everything into it at Lon Isallt

There was no let up from either side in the second half, Pwll creating a number of chances but Trearddur defending well.

No further goals, so it was Pwllheli who celebrated at the final whistle, but what a great effort from Trearddur Bay.
