The formation of a competitive C team has been a pipe dream at forward thinking Clwb Bowlio Rhuddlan Bowling Club for some time.

The planned emphasis was clear, enjoyment as well as development and to learn the sport of Crown Green Bowls without pressure on a splendid green.

It was great to see this vision come to fruition with the keenness and enthusiasm shown in the C team’s inaugural match against their B team counterparts in Division D of Clwydian Seniors League.

Even though Rhuddlan B predictably won this encounter 10 points to 2, there were some very encouraging performances by the club’s newcomers.

Stephen ‘Roxy’ Roberts took the eye with an excellent 21-15 win. Awen Roberts was well pleased with her nail-biting 21-20 victory against Joan Anderson.

Joan Barker produced some splendid woods before losing narrowly to Maggie Thompson-Williams 19-21 in a cliffhanger. John Davies and Kevin Warner also earned plaudits in defeat as did skipper Moss Beer who eventually succumbed to Max Richardson.

Rob Anderson and Ruth Maxfield were top blocks for Rhuddlan B. Indefatigable B Team captain Arwel Roberts played superbly though still recovering from recent major surgery.

Great to see this larger-than-life character in such fine form after stepping in for acting skip John Sheldon at the eleventh hour.

Rhuddlan Seniors A’s deserved home win in exciting match v Fron Park

recovering from a recent very serious injury

Rhuddlan Seniors A enjoyed a very good home win over Holywell based Fron Park in glorious sunshine.

The main difference between the two teams was Rhuddlan’s three single-figure victories.

Brian Crompton, a late call up from the B team, excelled in a fine 21-8 win over Ainsley Thomas.

Les Capper produced his customary goods against George Williams, winning 21-9.

Eddie Jones, with a top block score of 21-4 then gave a bowling master class in overpowering Mike Jones.

Alan Jones made an impressive home debut, backed up by good wins for Paul Oxley and Iwan Davies.

Notably, all four Rhuddlan losers achieved very creditable scores in defeat. This was epitomised by Fron Park’s Steve Round, who achieved a modest top block score of 21-14, albeit in his fine win.

Astley Jones, Cyril Jones and Alan Williams were the visitors’ other winners in an entertaining first match of the new season.
