BETTY PICKERING CUP GROUP 4

Trearddur Bay 9
Welshpool Town 0

What an outcome for Trearddur Bay! Cup drama at its best.

Sunday brought the last match from Group 4 of the Betty Pickering Cup and a place in the semi final beckoned for Bay only if they achieved a win by a nine-goal margin, something they had never managed in their history.

However, the home team soon showed they were really going to give it a go as early as the third minute when winger Freya Davies fed a ball into the path of Jess Woods who coolly slotted home.

This really gave the islanders a massive confidence boost and they were constantly on the attack.

The Trearddur defence took a no-nonsense approach, kept their shape and fed the ball to the wingers as quickly as possible. Two more fantastic finishes followed from Woods, after great work from first Clare Head and again from Davies.

Then the providers turned goalscorers when Davies scored in the 23rd minute after a clever pass by Catrin Jones, before Head made it 5 from a Woods corner with a powerful header.

The second half saw Woods score two more quick goals in the first 10 minutes , both after tireless running from Erin Mulvey.

Welshpool, to their great credit, kept running and battling for everything with keeper Palmer performing heroics. Trearddur brought all 5 subs on quite early to provide fresh legs and energy as they grew more desperate to get the extra goals needed.

The eighth goal came when Woods was floored by an accidental punch from the away keeper and a penalty was awarded. This was brilliantly slotted home by Bay keeper Katie Bolton with Woods withdrawn from the game.

Erin Mulvey (7) provided three assists for Bay

Trearddur Bay were now down to 10 players with all subs already used, needing a ninth goal to progress into the semis.

Amelia Roberts came up with it in the 86th minute, again after a wonderful ball from Mulvey.

Then followed a very nervous 8 minutes of injury time with the home dugout all biting their fingernails until great scenes of joy and relief at the final whistle.
