North Wales Coast East League: Big wins for Phoenix and Kinmel, Rhos hit 8 in cup

Penmaenmawr Phoenix won again

NORTH WALES COAST EAST LEAGUE

Premier Division

Penmaenmawr Phoenix 3 Meliden 0

Phoenix moved to within two points of leaders Mochdre Sports with four games in hand after seeing off Meliden at Cae Sling.

Saturday’s game was a testament to long-serving club member, president and groundsman Chris Davies.

With all other games on grass in the league called off, it would not have been a surprise if Pen’s fixture fell foul to the terrible weather conditions of late, but years of hard work and commitment on the pitch from Mr Davies made it possible for the match to go ahead.

Things started at a good pace with Meliden possessing a solid game plan and looking to cause the Phoenix problems from the off.

Kai Wallis was pivotal in the opening stages, getting on the ball for the away team and aiming to get them on the front foot.

Phoenix midfielders Ian Pattinson, Harley Crossfield and James Hobson soon got to grips with Wallis and cut out the danger.

This then allowed the home side to settle, controlling possession and looking to start creating chances for themselves,

Adam Hold went close with a free kick from distance in the 20th minute.

The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when a poor clearance from Meliden’s keeper landed at the feet of prolific goal scorer Daniel Williams, who made no mistake in burying the ball into the net.

HALF-TIME: 1-0

The home team started the second half the brighter, dominating possession and trying to carve out chances against a strong Meliden defence.

The Miners then grew into the half and started to create a few openings, but keeper Elliot Jarvis stood up to the test, claiming crosses and pulling of a couple of fine saves.

Hobson doubled the Phoenix advantage in the 62nd minute when he hammered home a free kick from the edge of the area.

That man Daniel Williams rounded off the afternoon, scoring from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to grab his 15th league goal of the season.

Phoenix manager Aaron Keating said: “A good afternoon for us today, keeping a clean sheet against a dangerous Meliden team who are capable of scoring goals. We knew Meliden wouldn’t just roll over and were well up for the game.

Our lads matched that work-rate all over the park and also played some top quality football at times. Another tough game for us next week when we look forward to welcoming neighbours Llandudno Junction to Cae Sling.”

Kinmel Bay 9 CPD Bro Cernyw 0

Sean Sheridan grabbed a hat-trick

Sean Sheridan was a hat-trick hero as fourth-place Kinmel Bay romped to a nine-goal victory over Bro Cernyw at Eirias Park.

Sheridan made it 14 goals in 12 games for a team he joined from Llysfaen back in August. It was the striker’s second hat-trick for Bay.

The hosts were 5-0 up within the first 28 minutes.

Charlie Jones struck in the fifth minute from a Matty Beach assist and soon after Josh Parry set up Sheridan for his first.

Beach was goal-maker again on 18, Jordan Bellham with the finish, then Sheridan bagged his second after 19, Jack Lloyd-Williams the provider.

Bellham completed his double with 28 on the clock, Parry executing his second assist.

The goals began to flow again early in the second half, Charlie Jones claiming his brace thanks to Bellham’s good work.

In the 56th minute it was 7-0, Sheridan winning the race to the hat-trick with a finish from a Dani McIlvogue assist.

Late goals from Lloyd-Williams and sub Ollie Gray, Charlie Jones and Parry assisting, completed the rout.
