Today’s CPD Y Rhyl 1879 v Nantlle Vale game at the Hops and Barley Community Stadium (also known by its more traditional name of Belle Vue) brought me an unexpected Christmas treat.
In the second half, just myself and a young lad were sitting in the stand behind the Rhyl dugout – or so we thought.
Suddenly the most enchanting angelic voices began to break into song. I looked to my right and saw two girls and a boy – probably all mid to late teens – sitting there watching the game.
They went through a great repertoire of songs, some of which I knew and others I didn’t. The ones I did know were Oasis classics, Don’t Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova.
The amazing singing continued throughout the second half.
I tend to associate football with far more raucous choral chants, such as the type the brilliant Rhyl 1879 fans were blaring out behind the goal.
However, the three youngsters – could I suggest the name Tri-Oasis? – were in a league of their own.
At the end of the match, I felt I had to say something to these young people who had lifted my mood considerably and given off such an ambient aura.
As I expected, they were extremely pleasant and grateful for my compliments. I told them they should put their talents out there and it turned out all three perform in musicals.
The girls on their own were sublime, just occasionally making me think of Tom Tom Club – especially the song Genius of Love – but when the young man joined in, it was perfection.
You just don’t expect this at a football game. Not only was the standard of play superb on the pitch, with Rhyl 1879 winning 6-1, it was also ultra special to be in ‘my’ stand.
It almost felt like these youngsters were a gift from above, my very own personal Christmas concert.
I didn’t get the young people’s names, I might never see them again, but today you transformed me from The Grinch into Tommy Steele!
Rhyl played football from the gods and I had a gift from the gods!
If you somehow get to read this heavenly trio, thank you so much!
