Will Bangor 1876 change it’s name – or remain the same?

Bangor 1876 are to ballot their supporters about the possibility of changing the club’s name.

If the vote favours the move, the fan-owned tier 2 club would become CPD Bangor City 1876 FC in 2025-26.

The Cymru North side currently plays at the Bangor City Stadium.

Some supporters are reluctant to adopt the name City, due to its connections to the long-standing Bangor City FC, founded in 1876 before being dissolved in 2022.

However, others are keen to reintroduce the City title. The former club won the Welsh Cup eight times, lifted three Welsh Premier titles and enjoyed success in the English pyramid and European competition over its long history before hitting serious problems in later life.

Since forming in 2019-20, the new Bangor 1876 has been promoted rapidly from tier 5 to tier 2, becoming one of Wales’ best supported clubs along the way.

Bangor 1876 published the following message on its website today:

At the club’s last Annual General Meeting, discussing the possibility of changing the name of the club to CPD Bangor City 1876 FC.

The Football Association has agreed, if the club’s supporters support this change, they will support it.

So we will seek the opinion of all the present members who have paid, with a good vote. Depending on the response, we will be able to stay as Bangor 1876, or introducing the new name for the season 2025-26.

Every member who has paid to be a member this term will receive an email or letter before too long, as the ability to vote and vote on the unique option to change.
