Rhyl 1879’s new manager has vast experience of English non-league pyramid

CPD Y Rhyl 1879 have appointed the well-travelled Paul Moore as their new manager.
Moore, 55, who hails from Warrington, brings a wealth of experience to the Welsh pyramid tier 3 Ardal North West club.
The new man becomes just the second 1879 manager, replacing Gareth Thomas, who recently left the club having been in charge since its formation in 2020.
Moore’s professional football career, which took in spells at Portsmouth and Hull City, was cut short by injury.
He dropped into non-league football and began coaching, starting at Macclesfield Town, with roles at Manchester City and The FA also.
Moore has managed a number of clubs, including Congleton, Leek Town, hometown club Warrington Town (2007-09) and Clitheroe before taking over at Colwyn Bay in May 2016.
The Seagulls had suffered back-to-back relegations and dropped into level 8 of the English pyramid Northern Premier League Division One North.
By December 2016, Moore had left Llanelian Road.
Next stop was Northwich Victoria, where Moore took the helm at a club in crisis in mid 2016-17.
Despite some potential lifelines at the end of the season, the announcement came that the club was to enter administration yet again (along with the inevitable 10-point deduction) and relegation to Step 5 – the North West Counties Premier Division – was confirmed.
Moore left in the Vics in September 2017, due to increased business commitments.
A short spell at North West Counties League side St Martins followed.
During 2022-23, Moore took over at Newcastle Town, helping them stave off relegation from Northern Premier League Division One West.
Moore was appointed boss of Hednesford Town in February 2024, but while he guided them to an unbeaten league run during March, the Pitmen were unable to avoid relegation to step five of the non-league pyramid and he departed the club in May.
Now comes a fresh challenge at Rhyl 1879, who announced the appointment of the A Licence holder today.
The club said his appointment followed a rigorous selection process against a high number of credible candidates,
A statement said: “He impressed us all with his confidence, experience, and inspiring vision for the team. His extensive network of players and his dedication to success make him the perfect fit to lead us forward.”
Upon his appointment, Moore said: “Throughout my managerial career, I’ve enjoyed cup successes, promotions, and relegation escapes, each one a unique challenge.
“The management team and I are excited to take on the challenge at Rhyl, a town rich in footballing history and now our new club embracing an exciting journey.
“We’re looking forward to building on the great work of the previous management and, of course, the Board. It’s an exciting challenge, and we can’t wait to get started.”
Managing Director Adam Roche added, “I am delighted to welcome Paul to CPD Y Rhyl 1879. He not only brings impressive credentials and vast experience, but he also came across as incredibly confident and inspiring throughout the selection process.
“I am confident that Paul’s leadership and vision will drive the team to great success and give our fantastic supporters what they deserve.”
