Shaun Cavanagh is back in North Wales football – but who with?
Exciting new signing for Trearddur Bay – former Cymru Premier player Shaun Cavanagh!
The 26-year-old is back in North Wales football after a spell coaching in Australia.
His last appearance in Wales was for Cymru Premier side Aberystwyth Town in February 2024.
A statement from tier 3 Ardal North West club Trearddur Bay said: “The versatile forward will be a fantastic addition to the squad, with experience in both the JD Cymru Premier and Cymru North leagues. Previous clubs include Porthmadog, Llandudno and Aberystwyth.”
Cavanagh made his senior debut at Prestatyn Town as a Bangor City player 10 years ago.
He came on as a late substitute in a 1-0 Word Cup defeat at Bastion Gardens on September 23, 2014, at the age of 16.
Cavanagh appeared in 34 first-team games for Bangor, 26 of them as a substitute, and scored four goals.
His best spell came in 2015-16, when he made eight starts for the firsts having impressed in the WPL Development League.
One of his best Citizens moments came in a Boxing Day derby in 2016-17 when he scored a late winner after coming on as sub in a 2-1 victory over Llandudno.
He joined Llandudno at the start of 2017-18, but by January 2018 had moved on to Cymru Alliance high-flyers Caernarfon Town, becoming Sean Eardley’s second signing at The Oval.
The season ended in joy for Cavanagh and his team-mates as the Cofis landed the Cymru Alliance League title to secure a much-awaited return to the Welsh Premier.
However, first-team chances had been limited for the Canaries and in 2018-19 he signed for Porthmadog, where he finished top-scorer with 12 goals in 22 starts as the Traeth men finished third in the Cymru Alliance.
Cavanagh rejoined a now Welsh Premier Caernarfon in 2019-20, but was back at Porthmadog in January 2020 where he again made a big impact, scoring six times in four matches, including a cracking double in a 2-2 draw at Prestatyn.
With the 2020-21 campaign wiped out by Covid, Cavanagh kicked off 2021-22 as a Llandudno player. and netted 14 goals in 24 outings that season. In 2022-23, he notched 10 goals in 26 games for the Seasiders.
At the start of 2023-24, he returned to Porthmadog and bagged four goals in his first game – a 4-2 Nathaniel MG Cup victory over Llanidloes Town. He netted another nine goals in the next 20 games before switching to Aber in the January transfer window.
His stay at Park Avenue was short, he spent a few months coaching Down Under, and now returns to North Wales with Trearddur Bay.
The versatile performer can play up front or in midfield, has a keen eye for goal and plenty of pace to play in wide positions.
