Calum Thomas was a hat-trick hero as Gaerwen stormed into the Junior Cup quarter-finals with a 5-1 victory over North Wales Coast East Division One opponents Llysfaen.
Thomas, just 17, boosted his season’s goals tally to 12 in 12 games for an Anglesey side which has already made a major impression in the Welsh Cup this season.
It was touch and go whether the tie would be on due to heavy rain overnight, but cancelling the U13s morning match to protect the pitch very much helped.
With the forecast promising dry weather for the rest of the day, by 11.30 am the surface was deemed just about playable.
Gaerwen’s young side made a fine start when Gwion Parry, assisted by Jay Finter, made it 1-0 on nine minutes.
Finter was involved again in the 19th minute when Calum Thomas managed to get the ball past the keeper.
Just before half time Brooklyn Jones, from a lovely assist by Robert Boyes, made it 3-0.
Llysfaen came out in determined mood for the second half, Lee Fallas setting up Steven Collins to score just before the hour.
With Gaerwen’s defenders and midfield playing really well, they were determined not to concede again.
The Auctioneers made some substitutions as fresh legs were needed and this meant a debut for Madog Williams from the youth section.
Victory was all but sealed on 84 minutes when the islanders won a penalty which Thomas converted.
And Thomas soon completed his hat-trick from an 18-yard free kick.
Craig Moore struck four times in an emphatic Junior Cup success for the Harbourmen.at Millbank.
Yet North Wales Coast East Division One visitors Wanderers got off to a flyer.
In the sixth minute, a corner was spilled and Petrit Mehmeti turned the ball home for 1-0.
Mehmeti struck again from the penalty spot to double the away lead on 19 minutes.
Town rallied and a piece of individual brilliance from Moore saw him dribble through the Prestatyn defence and fire past the keeper to make it 2-1.
Moore drew Town level following a through ball from Andy Will with 31 on the clock.
Holyhead were now growing in confidence and took the lead through Tony Meyer.
And the hosts grabbed a fourth before half time when Dan Doyle netted from a corner.
Holyhead started the second half brightly with Moore securing his hat-trick from close range.
Aneurin Saunderson then set up Paul Williams to tap home for 6-2.
Moore’s fourth of the afternoon – a thunderous long range strike – put the Harbourmen five ahead.
With the game drawing to a close Liam Young pounced on a mistake and calmly slotted home for the hosts’ eighth.
Town grabbed another through Sam Abbit before Kelvin Berks notched a consolation third for Wanderers.
Jake Carey was the star turn for Swifts with a four-goal salvo at the John Bright Leisure Centre pitch.
Carey made it 12 goals this term from 11 matches with strikes on 16, 23 and 25 – a nine-minute hat-trick – before adding another after 80.
Cian Newell began the home scoring, Morgan Gresty replying for Penrhyn Bay, who had Matthew Baldock dismissed for two yellows after 75.
Second-half goals from Gethin Roberts and Joe Dukes-Morgan saw the Quarrymen into the last eight at Tyddyn Paun.
Great win on the road for Rovers with Leon Owen, Leon Buckland and Harry Jones on the mark, Mike Jones replying with a brace for Sports.
Bethesda had sub Tomos Williams sent off for two yellows on 92 minutes before Gyorgy Szabo received a straight red for the hosts after 95.
