Former Wales and Liverpool defender Katie Davies was delighted to be back in football action for Trearddur Bay in Sunday’s North Wales Women’s League island derby at Llangefni Town.

Katie clears her lines as Llangefni’s Hannah Owen closes her down

The 40-year-old played as a goalkeeper in Bay’s 4-2 defeat in what was her first competitive game in a number of seasons.

She was signed by Bay manager Ali Thomas to add strength and experience to a squad which has introduced a number of younger faces this term.

Anglesey-based PE teacher Katie, who earned 20 senior caps for Wales and played for WSL side Liverpool between 2009-11, said she was generally pleased at how her return went, although insisting her match-fitness needs working on.

“It was nice to be back on the pitch, felt good but a little rusty for sure,” she said.

Katie looks to have this situation under control

“My plan is to help if they need me, I don’t want to replace anyone in the team, but just want to help when I can, even if that is just lending my experience and knowledge in training to help them in games.

“The team is a fantastic group of girls and I think they have the potential to do really well, lots of young talent coming through who just need a little more confidence to go with the experience they have.”

Katie was asked if she would consider helping out as an outfield player at any stage.

“I have no plans at the moment to play out, I don’t think my knee would allow me and I wouldn’t want to risk that,” she said.

Jess Jones, Jen Cox, Ceri Slaney (pen) and a Caitlin Cochrane own goal made up Llangefni’s total on Sunday, Jess Woods and sub Abbie Manning replying for Trearddur Bay.
