Big name in Welsh football joins tier 3 North Wales League

Katie Davies won 20 caps for Cymru and represented Liverpool

Exciting news for the North Wales Women’s Football League!

Trearddur Bay have signed a former Wales and Liverpool star defender – as a goalkeeper.

Katie Ann Davies, who under her maiden name Williams played 20 times for Cymru between 2004-10, has agreed to add her vast experience to the Bay’s tier 3 West division squad.

She could make her debut in Sunday’s game at Llangefni Town.

School teacher Katie, 40, began her career at hometown club Bangor City, where she played between 2000 and 2004, during which time Keith Fearns’ side landed the Welsh Cup and competed in Europe.

A central defender, she next spent three years at Tranmere Rovers and a further two with Blackburn Rovers, as well as in the 2008 off-season joining American W-League outfit Fredericksburg Lady Gunners.

After recovering from a damaged cruciate ligament, she signed for Liverpool in 2009 and remained with the FA Women’s Premier League club until 2011.

Katie Davies – then Williams (No 17) on Wales duty

Katie has played at all levels for Wales and was called up to the senior squad on her 18th birthday

She made her senior debut – the first of 20 caps – in a 3-2 Algarve Cup win over Portugal in March 2004.

In more recent years, Katie played for Caernarfon Town in the North Wales Women’s League.

A PE teacher at Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi, she has been married to Huw Davies since 2016 and is a mother-of-two.

Back in 2021, Katie was named in the All-Time North Wales Women’s Dream Team based on a poll of 30 top female players from the north past and present.

She has now decided to come out of retirement to help out developing club Trearddur Bay.

Trearddur Bay manager Ali Thomas said: “She will actually be signing as a goalkeeper and not a centre half.

“Her vast knowledge and experience will be invaluable to the team and the young players especially that we are bringing in this season. A tremendous signing for Trearddur Bay.”
