Two of North Wales’ most in-form teams will clash in the FAW Amateur Trophy this Saturday.

CPD Y Rhyl 1879, second in tier 3 Ardal North West, host Lex XI, top of the tier 4 North East Wales League Premier Division.

Both sides boasted 100 percent records in September, winning four straight matches apiece, which made them runners-up in Grassroots North Wales’ Club of the Month.

However, Saturday’s tie has added interest in the fact striker Jonny Taylor is now a Law player, having joined the club from Rhyl recently.

Naturally, the competitive Taylor was looking forward to the game when Grassroots North Wales interviewed him today.

Why did you leave Rhyl and how do you feel going back there?

Leaving Rhyl was a tough decision for me. I was welcomed into the club by every one of the boys, staff and the fans. I love the club, I had a great few seasons there.

I wasn’t playing as much as I’d have liked and after a discussion with my partner I just felt it was the right time to move on to get more game time.

I called Perry (Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas) and had a chat and he was class and wished me all the best so I’m grateful to him and the club for my time there.

It’s tough having your own business, a 2 year old boy and trying to justify giving up your full Saturday at my age and not playing the minutes I want to play, just didn’t sit right when I could be playing closer to home and having time with my family.

How are things going with Lex? How are they progressing as a club?

I’ve enjoyed it so far, I know a lot of the lads and the gaffa (Ricky Evans) already, it’s a stone’s throw from my front door and just works well for me so I’m happy. The lads are class and we’re flying at the minute still in all the cups and top of our league.

Lex are a great club they always have been a big club around the Wrexham area and have dropped down the leagues the last few years but the club seems to be in a great place and they’re doing everything properly and professionally so it seems to have a bright future

Do you feel Lex can get a win at Rhyl? Are you eligible or will you be cup-tied?

Saturday will be tough. The quality that Rhyl has in that dressing room. A lot of people have said things about Rhyl not going up the last two years, this and that, but I know that’s just around the corner,

Perry has a great squad there and the club are doing things properly and building for a big future, not just throwing money around willy-nilly. It’s going to be tough but it’s football 11v11 for 90 minutes and I think we can defo go and cause an upset, why not ?

I’m eligible to play in the game if selected but we’ve got lads scoring goals for fun at the minute so if I’m not then I’ll be ready when I’m needed.
