Women’s hockey: Promoted Rhyl off to a winning start in Cheshire

Lucy Edwards on target for Rhyl

Hockey: North West Women’s Division 4 West

Runcorn Ladies 2
Rhyl & District Hockey Club Ladies 5 (Mel Peake 2, Carys Smith, Jess Heywood, Lucy Edwards)

Rhyl Ladies made the journey to Runcorn on a surprisingly warm September morning and came home even more aglow after recording a fine win.

The North Wales side was keen to continue their fine form going into the new season after being promoted into tier 4.

The match began with Runcorn taking an early lead, scoring within the first 10 minutes.

However, Rhyl responded strongly, with Mel Peake netting twice before the break, following a series of great passing and strong attacking plays.

The second half saw Rhyl continue to dominate, with Lucy Edwards, Carys Smith and Jess Heywood each adding a goal to extend the lead.

Runcorn managed to pull one back, but it wasn’t enough to threaten Rhyl who were able to see out the game with a decent goal margin.

Despite the warm weather, both teams played with good intensity and energy throughout the match.

  • Rhyl Ladies are actively recruiting new players. Anyone interested please get in touch with Rhyl & District Hockey Club which can be found on Facebook or Instagram.
Welcome to all players of all ages and abilities, from experienced players to those who’ve never picked up a stick before. This is open to all ages too. There are a lot of transferable skills if you
already play another sport and quicker to pick up than you might think. Training is on Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm at Rhyl High Astro.
