FOOTBALL REPORTS – FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2024

JD CYMRU NORTH

Denbigh Town 2 Caersws 0

After a tough start to the season which brought three defeats, Denbigh got off the mark in style tonight by ending Caersws’ 100 percent record in Cymru North.

In the end, it could have been more emphatic in Town’s favour as they also hit the post and missed a penalty and other good openings.

The hosts took a 14th minute lead when Iwan Roberts found Sam Duffy who worked the ball smartly with his feet and lashed home.

Only a fine stop from Steffan Jones denied Nathan Brown as Denbigh dominated the first half, Owen Davies and Brown missing further opportunities to score.

Ten minutes into the second half, the home side won a penalty, but Davies’ kick was saved by Jones.

Brown’s free kick then struck an upright before Dewi Llion’s men doubled their lead on 69.

A cross from the left by Brown was met by Paul Fleming, who bundled his way through a sea of bodies to find the net.

Denbigh keeper Aaron Jones produced a great stop to foil Sam Phillips before Davies had a great chance to make it three, but blasted over.

Nonetheless, a fine display from Town and a much-welcomed first win.

Llandudno 1 Colwyn Bay 1

Report: Colwyn Bay FC website – many thanks. Attendance: 1.176

A goal in the 89th minute from Llandudno substitute Lee Stokes denied the Seagulls victory.
Craig Linfield had given Colwyn Bay a 20th minute lead, and although some fine saves by Rhys Williams either side of half-time kept the 1-0 intact, Stokes came off the bench to snatch the late equaliser.
Bay created plenty of chances to put the game to bed in the first half before Lindfield scored from Gwion Dafydd’s header across goal.
Sam Hart headed a big chance beyond the bar from a brilliant cross by Josh Carey, who then fired another opportunity over.
Llandudno were denied an equaliser when Rhys Williams diverted one shot round the post and made a good close range save right on half-time.
Tudno came out firing in the second half and Williams made two more good saves to keep Bay in front.
Bay were hanging on a bit at the end, but were close to taking all three points when Stokes grabbed the home side’s point saver.

Ruthin Town 7 Prestatyn Town 0

What a strange game football is. And nowhere has it been more unpredictable than in the early weeks of the Cymru North season.
Ruthin v Prestatyn tonight is a case in point.
Having lost two out of three league matches before this evening, including a 7-0 drubbing at Flint Mountain, Dave Evans’ side burst into life tonight with a 7-0 caning of Prestatyn.
Prestatyn had lost their opener 6-0 at Holywell, but bounced back seven days ago with a superb 4-1 win over a Bangor 1876 which had won their previous two and were joint leaders.
Based on last Friday’s show at Bastion Gardens, Town looked like a team incapable of losing 7-0, yet it all went very wrong at the Memorial Playing Fields.
Harry Martin (2), Gwion Owen (2, 1 pen), Jake Hughes-Hampson, Llyr Morris and Osian Davies shared the magnificent seven for the hosts.
