Preview: Legia Warsaw v Caernarfon Town – Uefa Conference League, Thursday, July 25, 7.45 pm

Legia Warsaw v Caernarfon Town
Uefa Europa Conference League second qualifying round first leg
Thursday 7.45 pm – Stadion Wojska Polskiego
Caernarfon Town face a daunting task on Thursday night when they take on record 15-time Polish champions Legia Warsaw on away territory.
However, one thing the Canaries players will not need to be concerned about is coping with a massive vociferous home crowd at the Polish Army Stadium.
The Europa Conference League second qualifying round first leg will take place behind closed doors after Legia were sanctioned by Uefa following crowd trouble.
It also means, though, that the famous Cofi Army unfortunately have been denied the chance to follow their heroes to central Europe.
According to the latest UEFA five-year club rankings, Legia are placed joint 87th with Belgium’s Anderlecht, while Caernarfon sit 402nd.
Although Legia are former European Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finalists, those achievements took place in 1969-70 and 1990-91 respectively, so have no bearing on what might occur this evening..
More concerning for Caernarfon is the fact it was only last season that Legia beat English Premier League fourth-place side Aston Villa 3-2 in a Europa Conference League group game in Warsaw.
Legia began their 2024-25 campaign in Poland’s top division, Ekstraklasa, last weekend with a 2-0 home win over Zagłębie Lubin.
Rafał Augustyniak and Brazilian Luquinhas, on loan from Fortaleza in his native country, scored late goals for the Legionaries at the 31,103 capacity Polish Army Stadium.
A huge test awaits Richard Davies’ side tonight, but they will go out determined to give their all and enjoy the occasion.
It seems almost unreal that in their very first season of Euro competition, Caernarfon will be up against such mighty opponents, veterans of 258 European matches, yet that is what will be happening and the Canaries have fully earned it.
No-one will forget their performance in beating Crusaders of Northern Ireland 2-0 at Bangor City Stadium in the first qualifying round first leg before losing the return 3-1, but prevailing 8-7 in a heartstopping penalty shoot-out.
Town have already done the Cymru Premier hugely proud and defied the odds in their debut European venture.
The Legia Warsaw experience is the reward – a chance to take on true giants of the game and create another chapter in the club’s history book.
