North East Wales rising star Mayzee Davies impressed again as she came on for her third full Cymru cap in tonight’s 2-0 win over Kosovo at Parc-y-Scarlets, Llanelli,
While the main story of the evening was Jess Fishlock becoming her country’s record goalscorer, and Cymru topping their qualifying group and gaining promotion back to League A of the UEFA Nations League, the 17-year-old Davies looked assured and composed in half-an-hour in a wing-back role after replacing Rhiannon Roberts in the 64th minute,
As well as completing all her passes successfully, Davies produced a late potential goal-saving tackle to deny Kosovo captain Erëleta Memeti, concocted a marvellous piece of skill to carry the ball forward near halfway and set up an attack with a smart delivery down the right in the closing stages.
It was a third substitute appearance for the Manchester United youngster. who made her full debut for Cymru in April.
Tonight’s victory achieved through goals from Fishlock and Mary McAteer ensured the women in red finished first in their qualifying group and sealed promotion back to League A of the UEFA Nations League.
Rhian Wilkinson’s side will now await the outcome of the Play-Off draw for UEFA EURO 2025 as topping League B group earns them the opportunity towards qualifying for their first ever major tournament.
Tuesday’s Group 4 qualifier was a completely dominant performance for Cymru, who enjoyed the majority of possession and chances.
Fishlock seemed destined to score and did just that in the 8th minute with a lovely run and finish which confirmed her as Cymru’s all-time highest net-finder.
Her 45th Cymru goal put her above Ian Rush (28), Gareth Bale (31) and Helen Ward (44).
By contrast, striker McAteer netted her first goal for Cymru with an assist from the record breaker during the first half. Fishlock’s initial effort came back off the post before the Sunderland forward converted the rebound.
There are tougher games ahead for Cymru in the Play-Offs and they will learn their fate on Friday (19 July) when the draw takes place in Nyon.
The Play-Off draw will take place at 12:00 BST on Friday, 19 July in Nyon and it will determine the ties for two rounds of two-legged contests, as 28 teams compete for the last seven finals slots at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland, playing two rounds of home-and-away ties.
The first round of matches will take place between 23 and 29 October. The second round of games will be played between 27 November and 3 December.
