Meet the new manager of Conwy Borough – Lee Pope!

Former Penycae, Corwen and Brymbo boss Lee Pope is the new first team manager at Conwy Borough.

Pope replaces Anthony Weaver, who announced he was stepping down as Y Morfa chief earlier this month.

A former academy manager and head of elite performance at Cefn Druids, Pope took the helm at Wrexham area side Penycae in 2020.

He moved to Ardal North East club Corwen in late 2021, first as assistant to Ben Heath before later becoming first team manager.

In November 2023, Pope took over at North East Wales League Championship Division side Brymbo.

Now he takes charge at Ardal North West club Conwy, where the challenge will be to improve on this season’s fourth-from-bottom place finish in the Tier 3 league.

Pope is a UEFA A Licensed Coach at both Youth and Senior level.

He spent 10 years at Cefn Druids, where he initially worked within the academy up to the under 19’s, before progressing to work within the first team management group.

Pope worked under manager Huw Griffiths for three seasons in the Cymru Premier League, later taking on roles at the Bala Town FC Academy before stints with Penycae, Corwen and Brymbo.

Conwy Borough report they have had multiple positive conversations with Pope and it is clear he shares the club’s vision for building a sustainable future.

“Lee spoke positively regarding progressing the both the first team and the club as a whole, continuing the positive steps of recruiting local players to the squad with opportunities for young players to progress,” added the club.

Pope has retained the experienced Martyn Jones within his coaching team, a decision the club is very happy with.
