NWCFA apply to FAW for extension to 2023-24 season so Junior Cup final can take place

The North Wales Coast Football Association is to apply to the FAW for an extension to the 2023-24 season so the NWCFA Junior Cup Final can still be played.

It emerged on Friday that the long-running dispute over this season’s Junior Cup semi-final between CPD Y Glannau and Bow FC has been taken out of FAW hands to an independent arbitrator.

Back in February, Y Glannau beat Bow 8-1 in the last-four clash, but the losing side put in a protest to the NWCFA, claiming their opponents had brought on an 81st minute substitute who had already played for another club in the competition. This is against the Junior Cup rules.

The NWCFA dismissed Y Glannau from the competition, but the St Asaph club appealed to a special committee of the area association and won.

Bow took the matter to the FAW, who expelled Y Glannau for breaking the competition rule.

Y Glannau appealed to the FAW, who awarded the tie to Bow for a second time.

Now Y Glannau have opted for independent arbitration to settle the issue, however with the season having to end on May 31, this leaves little time for a solution, meaning the Junior Cup final, where Llanfairpwll await, is unlikely to be played.

Y Glannau are adamant they have genuine grounds for the case to go in their favour.

The NWCFA are far from happy with this prospect, and announced in a statement today: “It is with great disappointment that the North Wales Coast Football Association (NWCFA) has learned that it will not be possible for the NWCFA Mabon Scaffolding Junior Challenge Cup Final to be played before the end of this playing season on the 31st May.

“The NWCFA will be making a request to the Football Association of Wales (FAW) for an extension to the playing season and for the final to be played at a later date.

“The NWCFA will not make any further comment at this stage.”
