One game from Europe – c’mon Caernarfon Town!
Two late goals at the Carling Oval on Friday night clinched Richard Davies’ side a meeting with either Newtown or Penybont – who meet tomorrow – in the play-off final.
Back in 2021-22, the Cofis should have landed a well-deserved debut European adventure when they defeated Flint Town United 2-1 in the end-of-season play-off.
Unfortunately, due to Uefa’s pathetic rule change that season, just three European places were available to Welsh clubs instead of four.
Instead of entering the Uefa Europa Conference League, Town qualified for the Scottish Challenge Cup.
Hopefully, it will be a case of second time lucky for Caernarfon when a spot in Europe will be the prize at next weekend’s play-off final.
The final will take place on Saturday, 18 May at the home of the highest-ranked team.
The winners will secure a place in next season’s Europa Conference League qualifiers.
Friday night’s victory over the students in front of 1,200+ at the Carling Oval took a long time to secure.
Caernarfon’s best effort of the first half saw Gruff John’s header from a Marc Williams cross pushed over by Alex Lang.
In the 38th minute, Eliot Evans sent a low ball across the six-yard box, but Met’s Thomas Vincent was unable to finish at the back post.
Sion Bradley’s free kick hit the post after the break before the deadlock finally ended in the 87th minute.
Dion Donohue crossed into the box from the left, Louis Lloyd flicked the ball on and Daniel Gosset got involved before Marc Williams lashed an unstoppable shot past Lang from 12 yards.
The win was sealed when Bradley broke from his own half at pace and fed a beautiful ball into Adam Davies, who slotted home for 2-0.
