Prestatyn Town is urging supporters to get behind the team en masse next weekend when they fight to preserve their Tier 2 status.
Town travel to Gresford Athletic on Friday evening knowing a win is essential to maximise their chances of staying in the Cymru North.
Both Prestatyn and Porthmadog are on 22 points with one game apiece left – one of them has to be relegated.
Port have a better goal difference of 7 and are home to table-toppers Holywell Town in their final game on Friday.
Therefore, Prestatyn will have to better Port’s result on what is sure to be a tense last night of the league campaign.
If Porthmadog lose to Holywell, a point will be enough to keep the Seasiders in Tier 2. However, a Port draw would see Prestatyn needing to win, taking into account the goal difference.
A Porthmadog win would leave Prestatyn having to also be victorious by a considerably better score then their fellow strugglers.
Prestatyn have had three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player in a 3-0 defeat at Mold Alexandra on December 31.
The club allegedly listed Travis Wilson as their goalkeeper when in fact an unregistered player took part in the match under that name.
Town will not appeal against the FAW decision.
If Prestatyn go down, it will be the first time since 2005-06 that they have played Tier 3 football.
No-one involved in the running of the club at the time of the Mold game are still at Bastion Gardens.
However, the new regime has ended up suffering the consequences of a rule break they were not responsible for.
Today, Prestatyn Town put out the following statement:
“Following Investigations from the FAW on the disciplinary charges brought against the club for the alleged participation of an Ineligible player in a Cymru North league fixture v Mold Alexandra on the 31st December 2023, the club unfortunately was found guilty by the National Leagues Board, and with immediate effect will now receive a 3-point penalty deduction.
“As a club we are naturally disappointed with this decision and have cooperated with the FAW on these charges, but we respectfully accept their decision on this matter and the punishment awarded for the offence.
“Our disappointment came from the fact that this breach in the rules and unsporting conduct occurred during a period when the club was under previous ownership. With this points deduction, we are now down into 14th place with 22 points, and just one game remaining in the league season.
“We were left hugely frustrated with this act of false identity and don’t condone such an action. The current chairman and manager were not aware of this situation when taking up their new roles within the club back in January.
“Both would also like to go on record and say that they will never look to breach these rules and regulations to gain any type of advantages against future opposition, whilst working in their current roles at the club.
“Our final league fixture is away to Gresford this coming Friday evening (19th April), 7.30pm KO).
“We ask if supporters can really look to get behind the players and give them one final push as they aim to preserve our Tier 2 status.”
