NORTH WALES LEAGUE EAST

Denbigh Town 3 (Harrison 33,Tulloch og 48, Purvis 57)
Welshpool Town 2 (Gwilt 31, Lane 61)

Report: Alan Stubbs (Cymru Sport)

Denbigh clinched runners-up spot in the North Wales League East after a hard fought and physical battle over bottom team Welshpool at Central Park.

The visitors had the better of the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 31st minute when former Adran Premier player Lucie Gwilt put a slimline chip from outside the box over the Denbigh goalkeeper Young into the top of the net.

Within 30 seconds of the restart Natalie Harrison forced a great save from Welshpool goalkeeper Sarah Parkes. Three minutes later Welshpool appealed for an offside that wasn’t given and Harrison scored with a low shot in the bottom corner eight minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Just before half time Welshpool had a strong penalty claim rejected after the ball appeared to hit a Denbigh hand, but the referee turned it down.

The second half started like it has so many times for Welshpool this season as they conceded within three minutes of the restart.

Catrin Davies pounced on a mistake from the Welshpool defence and crossed the ball into the 6 yard box only for Lily Tulloch to slice into her own net giving Parkes no chance.

From the restart Davies was causing havoc as she had her shot cleared off the line by Welshpool captain Jo Bliss-Bennett.

Denbigh won a free kick in the 57th minute which saw Lowri Claybook float a lovely cross headed home by Ceri Purvis.

To Welshpool’s credit they refused to give in and the goal of the game came their way when Beth Lane hit a 25 yard rocket into the top corner to give keeper Young no chance and offer the visitors hope.

With 30 minutes left both teams had chances with the woodwork being hit but no further goals.

Denbigh are away to Berriew for their final league game on 7th April in the knowledge the runners up spot is theirs and they still have a Betty Pickering Cup quarter-final against Llangefni Town to come.

For Welshpool progress is being made when you think they lost at home 13-0 to Denbigh in January. They have 2 more league games, away at Kinmel Bay next Sunday and at home to Bellevue the week after. Then there is the Betty Pickering Shield semi final against Northop Hall on April 28.

Berriew 5 Northop Hall 1

A comprehensive victory for Berriew as they overcame Northop Hall 5-1.

Hannah Richards grabbed a hat trick and Sam Jones made a scoring return in her first game since being stretchered off at the end of January. Katie Price scored the fifth.

Hannah Williams provided the Hall’s consolation.

NORTH WALES LEAGUE WEST

Llanystumdwy 1 Trearddur Bay 0

Just four minutes had passed when Efa Jones scored the only goal of the game for Llanystumdwy from a Nel Pritchard assist.

The reverse league fixture last September had ended 3-3, while in the Betty Pickering Cup, Llan had beaten Trearddur 4-0 at home and drawn 1-1 away.

Llanystumdwy have now completed their league fixtures, picking up 6 points from 10 games.

Trearddur Bay have two league games remaining – away to champions Pwllheli and home against runners-up Llangefni. Bay need to win one to avoid finishing bottom.

ADRAN PREMIER

Wednesday, March 27

Aberystwyth Town 0 Wrexham 2

After three defeats on the bounce in the Adran Premier Championship, Wrexham returned to winning ways with a third hard-fought victory over Aberystwyth this season.

Brooke Cairns and Carra Jones notched the goals on 9 and 38 minutes respectively for the third-place Red Dragons.

Sunday, March 24

Wrexham 2 Swansea City 3

Ellie Lake’s 92nd minute goal clinched the points for runners-up Swansea City at the STōK Cae Ras on Sunday.

Steve Dale’s side have been unable to beat the Swans this season, having lost three and drawn one against the South Wales giants, but all meetings have been very close.

Despite the result in their latest battle, Wrexham did have the consolation of scoring via a stunning wonder lob from Lili Jones and Rosie Hughes notched her 15th league goal this campaign.

Robyn Pinder (penalty) and Monet Legall were also on target for the visitors.
