NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Horace Wynne Cup quarter-finals

Corwen 5 Rhostyllen 2

Scott Evans and Owen Cordiner delivered two goals apiece as Corwen advanced to the Horace Wynne Cup semi-finals.

This meeting of the leading pair in the Premier, leaders Corwen and second-place Rhostyllen, resulted in a clear win for the table-toppers, as had occurred in a league battle in December, which Jamie Hulse’s side won 6-1.

Corwen produced numerous chances before taking the lead on 35 minutes.

The ball got stuck under the feet of Aayron Rafferty on the edge of the Rhostyllen box, allowing Cordiner to steal and play out wide to Henry Evans, who opened the scoring by putting an angled shot into the far corner of the net.

A minute later Rhostyllen goalkeeper Mark Richards sent his clearance straight into the path of Scott Evans, who chipped the ball over the number one from distance to double Corwen’s lead.

In the opening minute of the second half, Tom Mann found Scott Evans, who flicked the ball into the air twice before volleying it across the box and in for a candidate for goal of the season.

Chances fell at both ends before just after the hour Henry Evans saw his shot saved and rebound into his path. Evans got his second effort beyond keeper Richards, but could not celebrate as Dean Jones cleared the ball on the line.

The Corwen players claimed Jones had used his hands to save the ball; however no penalty was awarded.

On 65 minutes, Rhostyllen earned a spot kick which William Roberts fired into the corner of the net to make it 3-1.

In the 70th minute, Corwen’s Alex Webster blasted an effort against the bar.

Three minutes later Thomas Douglas found the back of the net to reduce the deficit to one and shorty after this the away side thought they had equalised, however the goal was disallowed for offside.

Corwen went in search of a fourth goal that would surely put the tie to bed.

They played the ball out from the back and Dafydd Evans fed in Cordiner, who beat the offside trap and keeper Richards to make it 4-2 on 79 minutes.

A minute later it was 5-2, Cordiner on target again after exchanging passes with Tom Williams.
