Flint girl Mayzee Davies says she is “honoured” to receive her first call-up for the full Cymru international squad.
The 17-year-old Manchester United defender has been selected by interim head coach Jon Grey in his 26-strong party for the upcoming friendly against the Republic of Ireland.
Cymru will visit the Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday 27 February (KO 7:30pm) as preparations continue for the upcoming UEFA Women’s European 2025 qualifying campaign.
Five players have received their first call ups to the squad, including Mayzee, Tianna Teisar, Olivia Francis, who will join Grey’s side following their friendly double-header against Scotland with the WU19s.
Midfielder Lois Joel and forward Tegan McGowan have also been selected for the first time.
Mayzee is the daughter of former Flint Town United, Chester City, Airbus UK, Colwyn Bay and Holywell Town defender John Davies, who built up a vast amount of Welsh Premier League experience in his career.
Following in dad’s boot studs, Mayzee is also a centre-back who has made great progress in her career to date.
On her selection for Cymru, she told Grassroots North Wales: “I’m honoured and grateful for the call up; it’s a great achievement for me and my family.”
Mayzee started playing at Flint at 7, then moved on to Llandudno for a season before signing for Everton aged 9.
She had a season with the Toffees before being offered a switch to Manchester City a year later.
Mayzee recalled: “It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down with the facilities they offer. I then had five brilliant seasons there.
“Unfortunately, that came to an end due to a change in travel restrictions for under-18’s alongside education ruling.
“That’s when I made the move over to Manchester United, where I’m currently playing. I’m getting the opportunity to train with the first team and I also enjoyed a recent trip to Malta where I got my first start for the women.”
Mayzee has represented Wales at under-15, U17 and U19 level, playing for the latter against Greece, England and Czechia in the UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship.
