Who makes our Team of the Half (ish) Season in North and Mid-Wales women’s football?

Seems like a good time to look back on 2023-24 so far and choose our Women’s Team of the Half (ish) Season.

We’ve called this concoction the North and Mid Wales XI of 2023-24 (it will soon become apparent why) to date).

Yes, Wrexham are head and shoulders above the rest in North Wales at present and perhaps a feature like this merits picking half of their team, but we work differently with grassroots always at the forefront.

Spread the joy, don’t compress it. Pound for pound rather than who has the most pounds.

GOALKEEPER

Katie Spruce (NFA)

Keeper was a really hard position to choose.

So many good stoppers out there this season, such as Sara Williams (Pwllheli), Shelby Wild (Kinmel Bay), Bethan Thomas (CPD Y Rhyl 1879), Rebecca Bott (Flint Town United) and Catrin Beech (Y Felinheli).

In the end we went for Katie Spruce, whose exceptional performances have been invaluable for an NFA side still finding their feet in Tier 2 football.

Katie has earned widespread praise from numerous opposing teams for her wonder saves this term, standing out especially in games versus Rhyl 1879 and Felinheli.

DEFENDERS

Sofie Owen (Llandudno)

After featuring in the Genero Adran North 2022-23 Team of the Season, the Llandudno skipper has continued to stand out in her relatively new defensive role this campaign.

She has inspired her team to top spot and title contention in Adran North, as well as scoring a Goal of the Season contender – a 40-yard stunner in a 4-0 victory at Rhyl.

Emma Roberts (Amlwch Town)

The 24-year-old has been a colossus for Amlwch Town this season, not only at the back but also through her goals output of six in 11 games.

One of Ynys Môn’s star players at the International Island Games, she recently took up the role of FA Wales Participation Officer, so is playing her part in developing the talent of tomorrow.

Louisha Doran (Wrexham)

Sadly ruled out for rest of the campaign after damaging her ACL in January and undergoing an operation, but Louisha merits a place in this team of the half-season based on her fantastic performances over 12 matches in a Wrexham shirt.

She stepped back up to the Adran Premier with the Red Dragons this season and needed no adjustment time at all, shining in central defence in the opening day 3-3 draw with Swansea City and playing brilliantly in subsequent games. We wish her well in her recovery.

MIDFIELD

Kylie Jones (Connah’s Quay Nomads)

After the summer departure of midfield taliswoman Kirstie Kural (she has since rejoined the club), much responsibility fell on the shoulders of Kylie Jones.

Captain Jones has been outstanding in leading the Nomads this season, putting in a series of top quality displays.

Not just a hard-tackling, inspirational midfielder, she also gets her share of goals.

Imogen Scourfield (Aberystwyth Town)

Imi accounts for the Mid-Wales aspect of this team.

As Aberystwyth play in the same division as Wrexham, plus the fact Grassroots North Wales works with a number of Powys teams in other leagues, we felt it fair to give Ceredigion a selection too.

A defensive midfielder, who can adapt to playing across the back at any time, this superb young talent has made her way into the Wales Under-19 squad through a fabulous run of form with Aberystwyth.

Imi is also a world dancing champion! So she could really liven up the celebrations if this team won something big!

Here Comes the Hotstepper was a hit for INI Kamoze. How about Here Comes the Hotstepper by IMI Scourfield! Well, we always have to include a pop music reference, don’t we? 😁😁😁

Rosie Hughes (Flint Town United)

This 18-year-old attacking midfielder has banged in 15 goals in 11 games this season for a Flint side seemingly running away with the Tier 3 North Wales Women’s League East title.

Amazing at taking on players as well as finding the net, this skillster is the youngest of three sisters in a cracking Silkwomen team.

While the other Rosie Hughes, who has amassed more than 100 goals for Wrexham, is the better known of the two, that may not always be the case with Flint’s Rosie tipped for great things.

Lili Jones (Wrexham)

Phenomenal 18-year-old star talent who has just about everything.

Strong in the tackle, a deadly passer, brilliant crosser, set-piece specialist and capable of scoring goals, Lili is Wrexham through and through.

Having first played for the club through the Girls Performance Centre, she returned to Wrexham aged 15, having previously been with Everton, and made her senior Wrexham AFC Women debut aged just 16 in September 2021, scoring twice.

A Wales Under-17 international, she captained Wrexham Under-19s to back-to-back league titles as well as establishing herself in the senior team.

She was the youngest player to be awarded a semi-professional contract in the summer of 2023.

Jenna Tugwell-Allsup (CPDM Y Felinheli)

Another goal for Jenna. Picture: Patrick Cain

This larger-than-life 37-year-old is having a real Indian Summer in her career.

Having won league titles with Caernarfon Town, Bethesda Athletic and, last season, CPDM Bangor, this term she rejoined CPDM Y Felinheli and has played a major role in helping the villagers move up to second in Genero Adran North, scoring nine goals to date.

Having been a defender for her entire career, last season she adopted a more advanced field position with Bangor and netted 11 times in an invincible title-winning campaign.

STRIKERS

Jess Jones (Llangefni Town)

Jess Jones (No 14). Picture: DAI SINCLAIR

One of the finest young goalscorers to emerge in North Wales football for many a year.

This season, the 18-year-old sensation has hit 33 goals in just 15 matches for tier 3 title challengers Llangefni Town.

The niece of Ynys Môn famed goal machine Marc Evans, Jess made her mark with Caernarfon Under-16’s before bursting onto the senior scene with Llangefni. Quick, brave and a stunning finisher.

Jini Owen Hughes (CPD Pwllheli)

We’ve certainly gone for youth in attack!

This 17-year-old up front magician has been magnificent for North Wales West League leaders Pwllheli since signing from CPD Merched Tref Caernarfon.

Jini has scored eight goals in her last five games for Pwll this term, including six in five in the league.

The international selectors should certainly in our opinion be taking a look at Jess and Jini, as well as Rosie at Flint.
