Wrexham AFC Women are pursuing a European dream
Wrexham AFC Women are aiming to become just the second North Wales female club side to compete in Europe after applying for a UEFA Club License.
It is the latest ambitious move from the team which has made a great impression as a newly-promoted member of the Tier 1 Adran Premier this season, having already clinched a top-four spot for phase 2.
Only once has a North Wales women’s football team previously taken part in European competition.
That was back in 2002-03 when Bangor City Girls entered the UEFA Women’s Cup, which has been known as the UEFA Women’s Champions League since 2009.
Under manager Keith Fearns, City competed in the same group as FC Sursee (Switzerland), HJK Helsinki (Finland) and KS AZS Wrocław (Poland).
They lost just 1-0 to the Swiss, were beaten 8-0 by the Finns and went down 6-3 against the Poles.
Wrexham would need to win the Adran Premier to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, news emerged today that 11 of the 12 JD Cymru Premier clubs have submitted applications for a UEFA Men’s Club License for the 2024/2025 season.
In the Genero Adran Premier, the FAW has received applications from six of the eight members to apply for the UEFA Women’s Club License for 2024/2025.
A UEFA Club License is required for qualifying clubs to participate in UEFA competitions.
