North Wales Women’s League West: Cox hits a treble as Llangefni win island derby

Jen Cox (blue) scored a treble for Llangefni Town at Amlwch

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S LEAGUE WEST – JANUARY 28

Amlwch Town 1 (Gadd 15)
Llangefni Town 4 (Cox 19, 54 & 64, Coulson 80)

Report: Stephen Richard Roberts

Llangefni recovered from a goal down to secure the win which brought them back level on points with West League leaders Pwllheli.

Jen Cox notched her third hat-trick of the season for the visitors, who completed a third win of the campaign over Amlwch.

Sunday’s game was switched to the town high school, which rarely gets water-logged, but is exposed to the elements so the match was going to be difficult when facing the wind.

Amlwch also had to deal with the late withdrawal of their regular goalkeeper, Llio Williams standing in between the sticks.

With the wind, Amlwch dominated the first half and within 10 minutes, Ellie Jones found Cerys Gadd in the box, who picked her spot and placed the ball in the corner.

Llangefni’s attacks were few and far between, however from one such surge, Amlwch failed to clear their lines and Cox poked home.

Amlwch continued to press with Lowri Thomas looking dangerous on the ball. Twice she was put through and each time was unlucky to see the ball bounce back off the crossbar.

Llangefni keeper Lucy Richardson also made some important saves and a Gadd corner was knocked off the line.

HALF-TIME: 1-1

The second half was a reversal of the first, with Llangefni now pressing.

This pressure soon paid off with Cox grabbing her second. Amlwch now pushed forward to try to level but it was difficult under the conditions.

Cerys Gadd scored for Amlwch

Another Llangefni attack found Cox in space and she smashed the ball home from 20 yards for her 12th goal of the season.

Amlwch started playing some nice football and created some good chances. Then a clearance out over the top of the Amlwch defence by Llangefni eventually found its way to Ellie Coulson who finished into the corner for what was also her 12th of the campaign.

The scoreline didn’t really reflect the match overall, but it’s about taking those chances. Good game played in the right spirit once again.
