Bangor woman in contention for the world’s greatest grassroots goal award!
A 21-year-old footballer from Bangor is in contention to win the world’s greatest grassroots goal title.
Former CPDM Y Felinheli midfielder Yasmin Williams is on the shortlist for the #PeoplesPuskas award for a goal she scored last year with current club Thame United of the south of England-based Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League.
The astonishing 35-yard curling strike is on a list of 23 wonder goals compiled by Danish sports-tech company Veo, who organise the #PeoplesPuskas to put lower-level players in the spotlight.
Every year the wider-known FIFA Puskas Award rewards the world’s greatest goals, but although anyone is eligible for the top prize, it invariably goes to the rich and famous.
The three finalists are chosen by a global fan vote from a shortlist selected by FIFA, and then a panel from world football’s governing body decides the winner.
The “lowest” level competition to produce a winner is the Campeonato Goiano (Wendell Lira, 2015), a professional state cup organised by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
Each and every year millions of equally impressive wonder goals are scored at grassroots level that routinely fail to garner the attention and recognition they truly deserve.
Veo is attempting to redress the balance by offering a platform to better promote all of the very best goals scored at non-league and amateur level each week, the world over.
Yasmin’s goal for Thame United against her former club Beaconsfield, as well as a stunning individual effort from Ruben Lima of Buckley Town, are in the current Peoples Puskas list of 23 featuring net-busters from all over the globe.
A reduced shortlist is expected soon and Veo are urging people to vote for their favourite online.
Yasmin serves in the Welsh Guards and is stationed in southern England, hence her involvement with Thame United, based in Oxfordshire.
Gdsm Williams has also represented the Army Women’s football team.
Former Ysgol Tryfan pupil Yasmin made history in 2020 when aged 17 she became the first female to pass out of the Infantry Training Centre with the Welsh Guards.
She continued to play for Felinheli until the end of last season.
