Mike Beech is fondly remembered at North East Wales League matches

NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE – REPORTS, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30

Teams held a minute’s applause on Saturday in honour of former league official Mike Beech.

Six years ago on December 30, the league lost much loved secretary Mike, who was 62 and lived in Buckley.

Mike worked tirelessly for grassroots football and for his clubs. He was unstinting in his work as a football administrator over many years.

Forever missed by all who knew him, including daughter Nicki and wife Carol, who proudly carry on his work.

The Mike Beech Memorial Trophy is competed for every season in tribute to a wonderful man.

Championship Division

Plas Madoc 6 Holywell United 1

Brothers Nicky Williams and Jamie Williams scored a hat-trick apiece as Plas Madoc strengthened their grip on third spot in the Championship.

It was a 10th win in 11 league games for Ryan Roberts’ side, who have netted 71 goals in the process.

Long-time goal machine Nicky Williams moved up to 15 for the season with today’s treble, while elder sibling Jamie is doing even better on 18 in all competitions.

In the first half at Ysgol y Grango, Jamie struck twice and Nicky added a single.

The second half saw Nicky reach his hat-trick first with a penalty, Jamie making it 6-1 near the end with his third.

Jordan Bedford replied for Holywell, who had Charlie Williams red-carded.

Premier Division

Lex XI 2 Rhostyllen 2

The Lawmen produced a late fightback to secure a draw at Stansty Park, Wrexham.

Ricky Evans missed an early penalty for the hosts, then Lewis Bickerton-Cole edged the visitors ahead on 29 minutes before Tom Douglas added a second in first half added time.

It remained 2-0 to Rhostyllen until the 82nd minute when veteran substitute Alan Huxley halved the deficit.

Then in the 88th minute Jason Edwards made it two-apiece.

Deep into injury time, Rhostyllen had Drew Wickens sent off for a second yellow.

Penyffordd Lions 4 Overton Recreational 2

Both these teams progress to the last 16 of the Mike Beech Memorial Trophy.

In a good contest at Overton Rec, the sides were level at one-apiece come the break, Liam Williams edging Lions ahead before Alex Williams equalised.

Harry Massey nudged Overton back in front on 50, but a minute later Alister Randles made it all-square.

Ben Hughes’ penalty on 68 put Penyffordd in front, then an 85th minute strike by Harry Brown clinched it.
