FAW Amateur Trophy round-up: Tier 5 sensations Llanfairpwll into round five after latest penalties drama

Tier 5 CPD Llanfairpwll (pictured earlier this season at the launch of their new kit) are through to the last 32 of the FAW Trophy.

FAW TROPHY ROUND 4 NORTHERN REPORTS – NOVEMBER 25

Ruabon Rovers 3 Llanfairpwll 3 (Llanfairpwll won 8-7 on pens)

Llanfairpwll are the lowest ranked North Wales side left in the Trophy after the Tier 5 heroes maintained their fine record in penalty shoot-outs by getting past fourth-tier Ruabon.

Already this term, the Anglesey side had beaten Mochdre Sports (Welsh Cup), Talysarn Celts (FAW Trophy) and CPD Boded (Junior Cup) on spot-kicks – and they completed a four-timer by seeing off Rovers on Saturday.

‘Pwll do tend to make life hard for themselves at times, such as in their latest adventure, where they led 3-1 with seven minutes left, only to concede twice which meant it was down to pens again.

Still, with their track record, why would they worry!

Saturday’s tie at the Recreation Ground saw North East Wales League Premier Division Ruabon lead 1-0 at half time through the prolific Conner Kendrick.

All to play for in the second half and it was Llanfair who struck next, Adam Thomas setting up man of the match Cian Glyn Owen for a 51st minute equaliser.

In the 65th minute, the islanders were ahead when 18-year-old Tom Mummery found the net, Danny Connolly with the assist.

When Iwan Williams made it 3-1, Mummery this time laying on the goal, it looked like ‘Pwll were nearly home and dry with 79 gone.

However, the Wrexham area hosts cut the deficit through Kian Hughes on 83, then in the 96th minute Chris Bennion, whose goal won the FAW Trophy for Chirk in 2017, levelled it to force pens.

Were Llanfairpwll down and out? Not a bit of it, they picked themselves up and won the penalties contest 8-7.

CPD Llanfairpwll have already been big news this season after sealing a kit deal with world-famous La Liga.

Now they are making big headlines all over again. Is there a special angel up above looking over them?

Bow Street 0 Llangefni Town 0 (Bow won 5-3 on penalties)

Trophy heartbreak for Llangefni as they lost out on penalties at Cae Piod.

After a fairly even contest produced no goals, spot-kicks were needed and while Ardal North East hosts Bow converted a perfect five, Cefni were denied by a fine Lewis James save.

Brickfield Rangers 1 St Asaph City 1 (Brickfield won 7-6 on penalties)

Another all Tier 3 clash was settled on penalties with Brickfield emerging victorious.

In the match itself, Andy Vale handed Rangers a 40th minute lead, but Saints levelled after 59 through David Hayes.

No further goals, so it was down to pens and the Wrexham side edged it 7-6.

Conwy Borough 2 NFA 2 (Borough won 4-3 on penalties)

Friday night’s tussle at Y Morfa saw Tier 4 underdogs NFA lose a 2-0 lead before eventually exiting the competition on penalties.

A 35th minute own goal from keeper Calum McKarlie gave the visitors a half time advantage and it looked good for the Rhyl-based hopefuls when Matthew Rees doubled their score just after the break.

However, Sean McCaffery hit back for the Tier 3 hosts on 56 and sub Jack Parry-Jones squared the tie after 79 with a wonderful effort.

NFA keeper Philip Scott Williams was red carded late in the game, but replacement Jamie Whitehouse went on to make magnificent saves from Toby Jones and Connor Whelan to deny the hosts.

In the end the game was decided on pens. Borough did not miss from the spot and one NFA effort hit the bar with another saved by McKerlie which meant Boro prevailed 4-3.

Holyhead Hotspur 3 Cefn Albion 0

Man of the match Cory Williams scored twice and provided an assist for Deian Parry to score as Hotspur did a good job in seeing off fellow Tier 3 opponents Cefn Albion in the Trophy.

The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute when Kane Roberts’ through ball found ex-Cymru Premier striker Williams, who rounded the goalkeeper on the edge of the box to fire home.

Great hold up play by Williams set up number two on 61 minutes, the striker when working the ball for Parry to drive into the box and blast into the top corner.

A brilliant cross by Kane Roberts enabled Williams to pounce ahead of the advancing keeper and find the net to seal the win.

CPD Llannefydd 5 Tywyn-Bryncrug 1

No stopping Llannefydd in this one, Llion Morris striking twice with Jack Gronow, Sam Jones and Tom Jones also on the mark for Gwyndaf Pritchard’s side.

Nick Williams notched a consolation from the penalty spot for Tywyn-Bryncrug.

The hosts’ day was just slightly tarnished when they had Bradley Jones red-carded five minutes into stoppage time.

Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant 6 Rhos Aelwyd 1

What have North Wales teams done to upset Llanrhaeadr?

After back-to-back home wins over Cefn Albion, the Powys powerhouses walloped Rhos Aelwyd 6-1 in the Trophy on Saturday.

Goals by Billy Clarke (3), Gruff Evans, Garmon Evans and Will Roberts-Morris sent Llan into the last 32, Tom Smith with a scant late consolation for Aelwyd.

Llanrwst United 0 Llanuwchllyn 6

What a win for Llanuwchllyn! 6-0 away to one of the better sides in Ardal North West.

The on-fire Meilir Williams poached a hat-trick for the visitors to reach 21 goals for the campaign, captain Garmon Hafal scored twice and sub Will Owen also netted.

Meliden 4 CPD Y Felinheli 0

North Wales Coast East Premier Division leaders Meliden pulled off a notable giant-killing by thrashing Tier 3 outfit Felinheli 4-0 at The Mine.

After a goalless first half, the Prestatyn area hosts really went to town in the second period.

Joe Roberts struck twice, while Frankie Davies and Macauley Ross also found the target for the magnificent Miners.

Menai Bridge Tigers 5 Bow 3

Another Tier 4 side through to round five are Menai Bridge, who rallied from 2-0 down to beat Tier 5 travellers Bow.

The underdogs from North Wales Coast East Division One started brilliantly with goals on 13 and 15 minutes respectively from veterans Shane Middleman and Robbie Parry.

Paul Rowlands replied for the islanders on 42 and in first half added time a Callum Graves penalty made it all-square.

Bow were far from discouraged and seven minutes into the second half, Parry pocketed his second to make it 3-2.

However, the Tigers are cup specialists these days and after Callum Thomas levelled the tie on 62 from a Jamie Ryan-Jones assist, Graves and Tom Parry added further goals to send the Anglesey aces through. Great effort from Bow, however.

Penmaenmawr Phoenix 0 CPD Y Rhyl 1879 6

A full match report on this tie has appeared elsewhere on Grassroots North Wales.

Rhyl scorers were: Meirion Pughe, Kieran Ellis, James Cairns, Alex Jones, Adam Hold and Ollie Staveley.

Penrhyncoch 3 Connah’s Quay Town 1

Tier 3 giants Penrhyncoch ended hopes of further progression for Tier 4 warriors Town.

Yet it was the North East Wales League Premier outsiders who struck first, Pascal Gomez netting on 26 minutes to give the visitors an interval lead.

Penrhyn needed up to their game in the second stanza and did so, a Niall Coleridge penalty, plus further net-finders from Courtney Perkins and Dan Evans sealing the tie.

Pwllheli 0 Flint Mountain 4

Seven wins in a row for Mountain, who added a place in the last 32 of the Trophy to their brilliant feat of making the Welsh Cup final 16.

Aden Shannon’s side were too strong for fellow Ardal North West team Pwllheli, Mike Hayes (2), Rob Hughes and Joe Holt sharing the away goals.

Assists were supplied by Tom Ruffer (2), Hughes and Lloyd Ellams.

Saltney Town 1 Llay Welfare 3

Goals from Dan Richardson, Owen Roberts and an injury-time decider from Jonathan Collo made sure Llay advanced in this all-Ardal North West battle at the Dragon Steel Stadium.

Saltney worked hard as ever, and were level at half time after Lewis Fearns found the net.

Unfortunately, the Bordermen were reduced to 10 men on 42 minutes after Hayden Hughes was shown a second yellow, and this undountedly affected their chances, having to play all of the second half a player down.

Llay joint-manager Steven Halliwell said: “We had loads of chances to score more goals but yet again we left it late to seal the victory. Happy to progress and hope for a good trip for the lads in the next round. Special mention to Dan Richardson who stepped up from the reserves and put in a top performance.”
