Tier 5 Llanfairpwll caused an FAW Amateur Trophy upset when they knocked out higher-graded Talysarn 4-3 on penalties after the teams had shared six goals at Maes Eilian.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Glyn Hughes-Thomas’ low cross from the right was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Adam Thomas at the near post.

Llanfairpwll were back on level terms within three minutes when Rees Roberts diverted a Cian Owen cross into the penalty area past Celts custodian Daniel Tindall.

The hosts went ahead for the first time when Marquis Holland converted a 28th minute penalty awarded by referee Paul Scholes.

Talysarn were back on level terms seven minutes before the interval when Hughes-Thomas ran on to a well-timed through ball from Iestyn Worth before rounding the advancing Tindall and turning the ball into an empty net.

Llanfairpwll regained this lead eight minuteS after the break when Iwan Williams was picked out by Owen’s precise pass and finished from close range.

It appeared the Anglesey hosts were heading to victory when the tier 4 North Wales Coast West Premier Division Celts equalised five minutes into stoppage time as Hughes-Thomas was played through on goal by substitute Aled Jones to drive home an equaliser to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Ecstasy for Llanfairpwll after winning their penalty shoot-out against higher-league Talysarn

The outcome of the match would be decided from the penalty spot and Talysarn had the early advantage when the hosts struck the crossbar. However, Llanfairpwll turned the shoot-out around by converting their remaining penalties and the visitors failed to put away two of their own kicks.
