Finally, at the 39th time of trying, a North Wales club has beaten Cardiff Met University in a national league match.

Going back to the league’s inception in 2009, when it went fully national in 2012-13, and then became the Adran Premier in 2021-22, the South Wales students had won 36 of 38 league encounters against northern opposition, with two draws.

That all changed on Sunday, November 5, when Wrexham claimed a landmark 3-0 win at the Cyncoed Campus.

Formerly known as UWIC. Cardiff Met defeated Wrexham 3-0 in the national final of 2011-12 and since the Wales-wide league was born the students had defeated Llandudno/Junction 14 times out of 14, Caernarfon Town six out of six, Northop Hall two out of two, Wrexham five out of six and Rhyl/Rhyl and Prestatyn nine out of 10.

The only exceptions were a 3-3 draw with Wrexham in 2013-14 and a 2-2 split at Rhyl in 2017-18, where the capital side grabbed a very late equaliser.

Today, Wrexham made history, league top-scorer Rosie Hughes breaking the deadlock on 61 minutes with her 10th of the season before Mari Gibbard and Ava Suckley struck on 73 and 90 respectively.

The day was tarnished somewhat when goal machine Hughes was sent off for a second yellow card in the 99th minute.

Nonetheless, nothing could take away yet another major achievement by this immense Wrexham outfit, who sit second in the table.

A major positive for the Red Dragons was the clean sheet on debut for keeper Chloe Ankers.
