JD WELSH CUP QUALIFYING ROUND TWO PREVIEWS – SATURDAY, AUGUST 19
NORTH WEST
Amlwch Town v Llanuwchllyn
A difficult one in prospect for tier four Amlwch against one of the strongest sides in the tier 3 Ardal North East League.
Conwy Borough v Talysarn Celts
Relegated to tier 3 this season, Conwy are finding the going tough in Ardal North West and will need to be on their mettle to get past a determined tier 4 side opponent in Talysarn.
Glantraeth v Rhos United
After last weekend’s heavy loss at home to Menai Bridge, Glantraeth will be anxious to bounce back when tier 5 Rhos United visit Anglesey. Rhos have plenty of talent on offer and they can push their hosts hard.
Holyhead Town v Llandudno Junction
Three wins out of three for tier 5 Holyhead so far, but it will be much more testing against the Junction from the T4 North Wales Coast East Premier.
CPD Boded v Llanrwst United
This one has been switched to Anglesey and tier 5 Boded will relish the opportunity to take on the experienced Llanrwst from third-tier Ardal North West.
Holyhead Hotspur v Llysfaen
A real treat for Llysfaen as they travel to Holy Island to meet the tier 3 Hotspur, who have just come down from the Cymru North. This is a real David v Goliath, but Emlyn Robert Jones’ visiting side caused a shock in the last round by knocking out higher level Llansannan.
Menai Bridge Tigers v Penrhyndeudraeth
Good battle in prospect between two sides from the same division. Difficult to call, but with home advantage Menai are probably favourites to edge it.
Mochdre Sports v Llanfairpwll
With Mochdre having started the season so well, it is hard to make an argument for a Llanfairpwll team from a league below which is not in the best of form.
Nantlle Vale v Nefyn United
Ardal North West leaders Nantlle Vale are flying, but Nefyn are a good cup side and this one could end up closer than the form book suggests.
Pwllheli v Penmaenmawr Phoenix
Fantastic contest in prospect between new tier 3 side Pwllheli and one of tier 4’s strongest on paper in Phoenix. Home win probably, but another tie offering a sniff of an upset.
Y Felinheli v Llanberis
A great 2-1 win at Conwy Borough in midweek will have risen Felinheli’s confidence, but although Llanberis play in a league below they are genuine dangers.
NORTH EAST
Cefn Albion v Hawarden Rangers
Big chance for Albion to make the next round as they take on a fellow tier 3 side who have lost all four league matches so far.
Corwen v Llay Welfare
Ardal North East visitors Llay have kicked off their campaign really well and it will take a big performance from tier 4 hosts Corwen to stop them.
Flint Mountain v Kinmel Bay
Another potential stormer. Mountain surprisingly lost at home to St Asaph this week and will be going all out to avoid any slip-ups against a Kinmel side playing a standard below, but who have lots of goals in their locker.
Greenfield v Rhos Aelwyd
Away win looks the most likely outcome with Rhos shaping nicely in Ardal North West and Greenfield not firing as yet in tier 4.
Mynydd Isa v Cerrigydrudion
Could go either way, but Mynydd Isa have looked solid enough at home so far, although fellow fourth-tier Cerrig picked up a good win away to Rhuddlan in midweek.
NFA v Llandyrnog United
As expected, a much-strengthened NFA squad have made a powerful start to life in tier four. Big ask for Llandyrnog, who will no doubt be boosted, however, by their win over Abergele on Wednesday.
Penycae v CPD Gronant
Two tiers between this pair, but underdogs Gronant from the North East Wales Championship Division are very capable of causing an upset taking into account the quality within the squad and their goal-packed start to 2023-24.
Rhuddlan Town v Brickfield Rangers
Not a great opening to the season for Rhuddlan, bottom of the tier 4 North Wales Coast East Premier after two defeats, while Brickfield have won two and lost two in Ardal North West but struggled on their travels.
CPD Y Rhyl 1879 v Llangollen Town
An all-tier 3 battle with Rhyl 1879, third in Ardal North West with three wins from four hosting Llangollen, two victories, a draw and a single defeat on their log in Ardal North East.
Despite their recent loss at home to Flint Mountain, 1879 have looked solid since, scoring 6 and conceding 0 in two matches, and at Belle Vue should win a close one.
St Asaph City v Y Glannau
Two St Asaph based sides who operate two standards apart.
Ardal North West City have just won at Flint Mountain in the league and on best form should progress comfortably, but Y Glannau are a decent outfit who eliminated higher tier Abergele in the last round.
