Amlwch Town relegation request is refused, but club makes fantastic start to 2023-24 season

An unofficial attempted status swap between two Anglesey football clubs saw only one get what they wanted.

Amlwch Town had requested they be relegated to the tier 5 North Wales Coast West League Division One after struggling in the Premier last season, eventually finishing next-to-bottom.

Pentraeth, meanwhile, who ended up bottom of the Premier in 2022-23 and were relegated to Division One, expressed a desire to avoid the drop and stay in the tier 4 division.

Both club requests were turned down by the North Wales Coast FA, so appeals were made to the Football Association of Wales.

It was decided that Pentraeth be permitted to stay in the Premier, but also that Amlwch must remain there too.

This means the Premier will be a 15-team division this season, while Division One is cut to 12 clubs.

Amlwch Town FC said in a statement: “It was decided we would ask to be relegated as we had a very difficult season and player numbers weren’t looking good moving forward.

“After recent seasons we felt a reset for the club might be a good idea. We went through the appeals process where it was decided we would stay in tier 4.

“Over the last few weeks we have been able to add some exciting signings to the squad and had a positive pre-season. As a group we are looking forward to the new season with a renewed optimism.”

And the 2023-24 season started really well on Saturday when they knocked Llanrug United out of the Welsh Cup 1-0 at Lon Bach thanks to a late Shane Jones decider.

Pentraeth were approached for comment, but gave no response.
