REPORT: Intermediate Cup Final…..

St Asaph City became the 50TH team to win the NWCFA Intermediate Cup on Saturday afternoon at Cae Sling, Penmaenmawr.

The competition was known as the North Wales Amateur Cup from 1894/95 to 1974-75 after which it was renamed the NWCFA Intermediate Cup.

The newly-named knockout tournament only ran from 1975-76 to 1980-81 before it was suspended.

It disappeared off the North Wales football calendar for 27 years until returning in 2008-09.

After seven more finals it was suspended again after the 2015-16 competition won by Llanystumdwy.

It made a comeback last season, but the final between Bangor 1876 and CPD Y Rhyl 1879 was never played as no suitable venue could be found or date agreed upon.

After making it the whole way this season, it is hoped the competition is back for good.

Saints of the North Wales Coast East Premier went 1-0 up over North Wales Coast West Premier side Menai Bridge in the 21st minute, James Williams notching his 20th goal this season.

Callum Roberts doubled the lead on 29 minutes, Jackson Brewerton with the assist, as he was for the opener.

Captain Daniel Williams added a third three minutes into the second half and Jackson Brewerton made absolutely sure of a Saints success by scoring on 67, Josh Brown setting him up.

At the final whistle it was time to celebrate a very special season in St Asaph City’s history.
