Two of Ynys Môn’s all-time greats have paired up to reach the 100 goals mark combined for the 2022-23 season.

Asa Thomas and Mel McGinness, both of Trearddur Bay, hit the century three days before Andrew Swarbrick and Conner Kendrick did likewise for Ruabon Rovers in the North East Wales League Championship Division (tier 5).

Thomas notched his 74th of the campaign in Saturday’s Division One Cup 4-1 semi-final win over Llanfairpwll, while McGinness’ double in the same game put him on 27.

Asa is the biggest cert since Constitution Hill to win this season’s Bob Brodie Trophy for the top goalscorer in Anglesey senior football. His 74 goals is already a Trophy record. He also played his part in a ton-partnership last season, netting a total of 126 goals with Marc Evans for tier 4 champions Bodedern Athletic (Marc 68, Asa 58).

Mel was actually the first-ever winner of the competition 11 years ago, when he netted 50 times for Holyhead Hotspur.

The Bob Brodie Trophy has been competed for every season (except 2020-21 due to Covid) since 2011-12.

It is named in honour of Bob, a Holyhead-based Scot, who was a highly respected player and manager on the island.

Second in the current standings, and likely to finish runner-up, is the phenomenal 18-year-old Connor Owen, who has banged in 34 goals in tier 4 with Gwalchmai.

Third is Caergybi’s Louis Chapman on 29, fourth Cemaes Bay’s Matt Reynolds on 28, while Mel McGinness is a handy fifth with his 27 net-busters.
