Report: Ollie Williams
Denbigh reached their second cup final of the season and remain on course for a tremendous treble after last Saturday’s triumph at Central Park.
Town will now meet either Llangefni Town or Bow Street in the Ardal North League Cup Final. The latter two will play their semi this Saturday.
In boiling conditions for the visit of Ardal North East outfit Builth Wells last weekend, Denbigh had the first real sight of goal when in-form striker Matthew Worrall danced through defenders before forcing goalkeeper Zeke Vivian into a great save.
Moments later Builth broke from Denbigh’s corner and forced Aaron Jones into a smart save to thwart an effort from range.
The home side broke through after 19 minutes.
Jake Walker received the ball with his back to goal before shooting on the turn and beating a hapless Vivian.
The Builth shot-stopper was kept busy as he denied a long-range effort from Paul Fleming and kept out Nathan Brown’s low strike.
Five minutes before the break Worrall almost doubled the Denbigh advantage when meeting a cross with his head, only to find the crossbar, whilst Fleming’s follow-up could not find the target.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Builth Wells
Nine minutes into the second half, Town gave themselves breathing space when Worrall found himself in the box, taking a touch before firing home.
Three minutes later, Ben Lockley crossed from the right and Brown hit a volley first time on his right foot which flew into the net – what a goal!
However, Builth Wells were resilient and fought back hard just after the hour mark. Lyndon Jones’ shot from the right was parried away by goalkeeper Jones before the resulting corner was swung in and rattled the crossbar.
Eventually the visitors would break their duck, Tommy Rowlands slotting into an empty net after confusion between Jones and Billy Holmes.
Going into the last 10 minutes both sides were pressing but the game was surely put to bed when Dan Parry-Jones crossed from the right and Worrall smashed home a superb volley.
Just before the end, substitute Oliver Hansen hammered in a fifth.
A 79th minute penalty from top-scorer Matty Jones clinched Llangefni a home semi-final with Bow Street from Ardal North East this Saturday.
Last Saturday’s tie at Llanrwst was between two teams who had both been convincingly knocked out of the competition, only to gain a reprieve due to their opponents breaking the rules over player eligibility.
Llanrwst first-aider Michael Roberts was red-carded on 80 minutes.
