But three minutes later, a brilliant looping Hesp header via a great free-kick from Tom Jenkins made it 2-1.
Despite some late chances for the Alex, Athletic were able to hold onto the lead in a game where the sending off changed the complexion.
Porthmadog also ensured their JD Cymru North status for next season thanks to a 2-1 win over Penrhyncoch.
Stuart Rogers gave Port the lead before Daniel Owen equalised. Substitute Gerwyn Williams scored the winning goal on the hour mark.
Visitors Guilsfield came out on top of a seven-goal thriller at Bastion Gardens.
Callum Bromley, Joe Haycock, Steven Blekinsop and Iwan Matthews were all on target for the Powys men, while a Chris Cathrall own goal and strikes from Dean Davies and Tom Hilditch were not enough for Prestatyn to earn a result.
