TITLE COUNTDOWN – CYMRU NORTH: Gap is down to three points

JD CYMRU NORTH – MARCH 29, 2023
Holywell Town 2 (Forbes 28, 75 pen)
Chirk AAA 0
Three games apiece left and the gap is now three points.
Holywell Town edged as close as they have been all season to Colwyn Bay this evening after a 2-0 win over Chirk AAA at the Achieve More Training stadium.
Dave Forbes’ double, one a penalty saw off the stubborn challenge of the Colliers.
The 34-year-old veteran is now on 30 goals in all competitions this term, 18 of them in the league.
Despite Holywell’s amazing 24-match winning run, the Bay still remain in pole position in the title race.
Six points from a possible remaining nine should seal the championship for Steve Evans’ side because of their superior goal difference of 25 over the Wellmen.
With two of their last three matches being against next-to-bottom Penrhyncoch, Bay are firm favourites to finish top of the pile.
This evening’s game saw neither keeper properly tested before the deadlock was broken on 28 minutes.
Danny Andrews fed a great ball to Forbes, who blasted beyond keeper Mark Richards.
Chirk struck the bar early in the second half before Andrews forced a fine stop from Richards.
The points were sealed in the 75th minute when Forbes scored from the spot for his 30th goal of the campaign.
Holywell’s meanness at the back has been the stuff of legend this season, and a fabulous save from Keighan Jones in the closing minutes to thwart Dale Davies ensured another clean sheet for Johnny Haseldin’s men – their 16th in 27 league outings.
